While for many projects digitalizing might be a goal in itself, it is important to frame it within a larger story, which could include access by different publics, with different purposes and usage practices.
Based on the experiences of the UNESCO Chair in ICT to develop and promote sustainable tourism in World Heritage Sites, established at USI – UniversitĂ della Svizzera italiana (Lugano, Switzerland), the presentation will sketch the role of digital media for Heritage and Tourism along the ‘ABCDE’ framework: Access, Better, Connect, Dis-intermediate, Educate.
It will then provide cases from the tangible and the intangible cultural heritage, outlining their goals, processes, usages and evaluation criteria.
Lorenzo Cantoni holds a degree in Philosophy and a PhD in education. He is a full professor at USI – UniversitĂ della Svizzera italiana (Lugano, Switzerland), Faculty of Communication, Culture and Society, where he is director of the Institute of Digital Technologies for Communication. His research area lies at the intersection of communication, education and new media: from computer-mediated communication to usability, from eLearning to eTourism and digital Fashion, from ICT4D to eGovernment. He is in charge of the UNESCO chair in ICT to develop and promote sustainable tourism in World Heritage Sites, established at USI since 2013, and member of the board of WHES – World Heritage Experience Switzerland. He is Deputy Pro-Rector and Pro-Rector for Education and University Life at USI. He is director of the Master in Digital Fashion Communication, carried out in collaboration with the Sorbonne University (Paris 1 PanthĂ©on-Sorbonne), and director of the Master in International Tourism. He was Dean of the Faculty (2010-2014) and President of IFITT – International Federation for IT in Travel and Tourism (2014-January 2018).
Digital Methodologies
Algorithmic methods are increasingly infiltrating the humanities through the use of computer-based research. This leads to fundamental changes with regard to methods employed, and consequently methodological approaches in the humanities. Leading to questions of how the different disciplines get shaped through these methods. How do we frame our methodological approaches?
That’s why the focus of this event is on methodologies. By bringing together professionals working with very different methodologies, this topic will be explored on behalf of digital humanities.
The interdisciplinary digital humanities event DH-CH@ISR brings together international experts, doctoral students, advanced researchers, and cultural heritage institutions.
DHCH@ISR provides a unique opportunity for scholars and researchers to discuss multifaceted perspectives of the Digital Humanities, to broaden their horizons of digital practices and humanities methodologies. Supporting their thinking about Digital Humanities approaches to the different disciplines but also the arts and heritage and bring them in exchange with internationally involved institutions.
Organized in collaboration with the University of Basel, DH-CH Digital Humanities and ESA.
