In the Italy of the 1960s and 1970s, Carla Lonzi and Anne Marie Sauzeau Boetti, two art critics involved in the feminist movement, proposed to think about the art of their time through dialogue and listening, questioning the aesthetic categories in force. They both challenged the verticality of male genealogies of an art history understood as a succession of movements and great artists, in a conception that left aside the ideology of the masterpiece and the cult of creative genius. This lecture offers a reflection on the epistemic and political significance of their writings on the art and women artists of their time.
Biographies
Camilla Paolino is a doctoral student in contemporary art history at the University of Geneva and currently resident at Istituto Svizzero. In her research, she investigates the material nexus between reproductive and creative labor that emerged in Italian art practice in the 1970s, from a Marxist feminist perspective. In parallel, Camilla devotes herself to an independent curatorial research practice, animating the radio-web platform Canale Milva and the art space Lateral Roma.
Giovanna Zapperi is a professor of contemporary art history at the University of Geneva. She is the author several essays, including the volumes: L’artiste est une femme. La modernitĂ© de Marcel Duchamp (PUF 2012), Carla Lonzi. An Art of Life (Derive Approdi 2017), and with Francesco Ventrella Art and Feminism in Postwar Italy. The Legacy of Carla Lonzi (Bloomsbury 2021). She also curated together with Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez the group exhibition Defiant Muses. Delphine Seyrig and Feminist Video Collectives in France, 1970s-1980s (Lam, Lille and Museo Reina Sofia Madrid 2019-2020; Kunsthalle Wien and WĂĽrtenbergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart 2022-2023).
