Roma Calling

The Istituto Svizzero issues a new call each year for several ten-month residencies running from September to July.
The Roma Calling residencies are for artists (visual arts, design, architecture, literature, dance, theatre and music) who have proven experience in the arts or who have completed an education (Bachelor, Master or other) and for researchers doctoral/post-doctoral students (social, human, natural and other sciences).
Starting from the academic year 2021/2022, Istituto Svizzero introduced a new five month Roma Calling residency programme, for two researchers who present a project with strong links to the city of Rome and whose research may take place over a shorter period.

In addition to their personal research projects, residents are required to take part in the Institute’s transdisciplinary project. The programme, of about twenty days distributed throughout the year, is defined by the management in relation to the residents selected and their interests. It consists of events, study trips, workshops which include the participation and contribution of established researchers and artists.
This multidisciplinary programme makes it possible to develop ongoing research and networks, and to foster new and active exchange between scientific and artistic disciplines.

The call is addressed to Swiss citizens and residents as well as figures who have established solid relations with the Swiss scientific and cultural scene.
Candidates are required to present a personal research project that would necessitate or benefit from a stay in Rome and fit into a project of interdisciplinary collaboration between art and science.

Roma Calling 2024/2025

  • Brodmann, Vittorio (Visual arts) Vittorio Brodmann (1987) is an artist living and working in Berlin and Basel. In his work, he is interested in the comedy of human relationships, experimental forms of storytelling, and nonsense. He completed his studies at HEAD – GenĂšve. In recent years, his work has been exhibited at the Kunsthalle Zurich, Kunstraum Schwaz, Kunstverein NĂŒrnberg, and Kunsthalle Bern. In Rome, he will explore various painting collections to analyze the narrative logic of religious or mythological imagery, in anticipation of a new painting production.
  • D’Avolio, Maria Silvia (Architecture) Maria Silvia D’Avolio (1985) is a postdoctoral researcher in Architecture at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW). Her research analyzes intersecting inequalities from a feminist perspective, in the fields of architecture and the social sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Sussex. Between 2016 and 2022, she taught sociology, criminology, and gender studies at the University of Sussex and the University of Brighton. She has been a member of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) since 2022. Currently, she is working on a three-year project funded by the SNSF that explores the role of socialist and communist female architects in Milan in the 1960s and 1980s. In Rome, she will focus on the role of female architects between 1960 and 1980, analyzing the impact of their political beliefs on their architectural projects and theoretical thinking.
  • Delorme, Clara (Dance) Clara Delorme (1997) is a dancer and choreographer based in Lausanne. In her projects, she creates monochromatic spaces and characters that inhabit them. In 2020, she won the PREMIO award for her work MalgrĂ©s, and in 2022, she was selected for the Swiss Dance Days with her piece L’albĂątre. In 2023, she won the Label + Romand. She co-founded Arts_sainement, an association fighting discrimination and abuse in the performing arts, and LIEU COMMUN, a research residency and meeting place in Lausanne. In Rome, she will work on a new choreography, starting from the relationship between color and space.
  • Gigliotti, Angela (Architecture) Angela Gigliotti (1986) is an architect and educator. She is a Distinguished Postdoc Fellow HM Queen Margrethe II at the Danish Academy in Rome and is affiliated with ETH Zurich/gta. She is currently conducting research in the field of architectural history, with the aim of working on a monographic thesis entitled Italian Ticinification (TI-IT): Construction, Financing, and Promotion of Proximal Swiss Coloniality from Ticino to the Kingdom of Italy (1857-1947). She holds a master’s degree in architecture from the Polytechnic University of Milanand a Ph.D. in architecture from the Aarhus School of Architecture. In Rome, she will pursue a case study on the architectonic, economic, and social history of the construction of Villa Maraini, as a key example of intercultural and transnational Italian-Swiss architecture.
  • GĂŒr, Selin (Archaeology) Selin GĂŒr (1992) is a postdoctoral researcher and assistant at the Institute of Archaeology at the University of Bern. She holds a master’s degree in classical archaeology from the University of Istanbul and in settlement archaeology from the Middle East Technical University (METU). She obtained her Ph.D. at the University of Bern, focusing on domestic architecture and identity in the Cilicia region. In Rome, her research will center on examining the effects of natural disasters on the architecture and settlements in Lipari, Sicily, spanning from the Neolithic/Bronze Age to the Roman Imperial Period.
  • Kamber, Alexander (Cultural Studies) Alexander Kamber (1995) is a doctoral researcher in the field of Cultural Analysis at the University of Zurich. His research project focuses on theater and dance around 1900, exploring the intersection of performing arts, stage technology, and the life sciences. He studied Cultural Studies with a specialization in Philosophy and History at Leuphana University of LĂŒneburg, where from 2019 to 2021 he was a tutor and research assistant to Prof. Christina Wessely. His first novel, titled All das hier, was published in 2018 by Limmat Verlag. In Rome, he will focus his research on dance in the Italian avant-garde futurist movement, exploring the role of female dancers.
  • Mokhtar, Noha (Visual arts) Noha Mokhtar (1987) is an artist and anthropologist living and working between Zurich, Cairo, and the United States. Her artistic practice includes photography, video, installations, and writing, taking a critical approach to the concepts of culture, family, gender, and power. She holds a master’s degree from ECAL and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in anthropology at Harvard University. She is a co-founder of Edition Hors-Sujet, an interdisciplinary publishing initiative based in Zurich. Her project A House Back Home features four houses built by Swiss families with immigrant backgrounds and explores the link between architecture, identity, and migration, focusing on four countries: Kosovo, Italy, Portugal, and Egypt. In Rome, she will focus on the part of the project involving Switzerland and Italy.
  • Longe, Hunter (Visual arts) Hunter Longe (1985) is an artist living and working in Geneva. In his work, he experiments with modeling techniques and creates his own blends of plaster, cement, magnetic sand, various sediments, and lime. He earned a degree in Visual Arts from the California College of the Arts in San Francisco and a master’s in Visual Arts from the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam. In 2021, he won the Swiss Art Awards. His work has recently been exhibited in group and solo shows at Kunsthaus Langenthal; Last Tango, Zurich; Istituto Svizzero, Rome; Krone Couronne, Biel/Bienne; Centre d’art Contemporain GenĂšve; MusĂ©e Cantonal de GĂ©ologie, Lausanne; NoMoon, New York. In Rome, he will explore the self-repairing capabilities of the Ancient Roman concrete to integrate it into his artistic practice.
  • Pecoraro, Alessandro (Literature) Alessandro Pecoraro (1988) is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Fribourg. His main area of interest is Italian literature between the 18th and early 19th centuries, with a focus on the Italian-Greek writer Ugo Foscolo. He studied in Florence, where he earned an international Ph.D. (Florence-Paris-Bonn) in philology, Italian literature, and linguistics. In Rome, he will study the activities of the collector and Foreign Ministry official Domenico Bianchini (1835-1919) and the connections between collecting and Italian foreign policy between the 19th and early 20th centuries.
  • Pedroli, Domenico Singha (Visual arts, Film) Domenico Singha Pedroli (1994) is a filmmaker, artist, and architect based in Lugano, Paris, and Bangkok. With a multicultural and multidisciplinary approach, his works articulate complex narratives that explore the theme of traces and identity in all their mutability. Trained in architecture at USI and in visual arts at Le Fresnoy – Studio national, he has developed a sensitivity to photography, cinema, video art, and VR. His work has recently been exhibited at Visions du RĂ©el, Louvre-Lens, Bangkok, Beijing, and Busan. In Rome, he will develop the transdisciplinary project Mythopoiesis, which aims to provide a critical and contemporary reading of Ovid’s Metamorphoses, expanding the reflection on the potential of mythopoeia as a creative act, combining it with the evolution of forgotten places in the city.
  • Piccoli, Luca (Architecture) Luca Piccoli (1996) is an architect and SNSF Ph.D. student in museology at the UniversitĂ  della Svizzera Italiana, jointly with Sapienza University of Rome. His research explores the founding of the first public museums in Rome through the eyes and experiences of those involved in designing exhibition spaces. He earned his master’s degree from the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio and completed his training with professional experience in Paris in urban planning and the design of public spaces (Obras architectes, TVK). In Rome, he will continue his research on the origins and development of the city’s museums during the European Grand Tour, focusing on the role of those responsible for configuring exhibition spaces and the influence of the public on display choices.
  • Pollina, Julian (Music) Julian Pollina (1993) is a musician who released his first songs in German in 2015 under the songwriter’s name of Faber. Since then, he has become known in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland for his sharp lyrics. Two EPs and four albums constitute the core of his discography, drawing on influences from Balkan folk and chanson, while clearly falling within the German-language music scene, of which he is a recognized and relevant part. In Rome, Julian Pollina intends to immerse himself in the Roman music scene and will develop an album in Italian, in close collaboration with local musicians.
  • Savaresi, NiccolĂČ (Archaeology) NiccolĂČ Savaresi (1995) is a researcher in classical archaeology at the University of Basel. His field of study concerns the spread of Attic pottery in the Mediterranean. Since 2022, he has been participating in the annual excavations of the Enotrian necropolis of Macchiabate in Calabria. His previous archaeological training took place mainly in Italy (Trento, Bologna) and at various European sites (France, UK, Greece). In Rome, he will continue his research, focusing on the commercial ties between Athens and the Hellenic populations of southern Italy.
  • Viviani, Ambra (Visual arts) Ambra Viviani (1993) is an artist living and working between Naples and Basel. Her research focuses on the de/reconstruction of the language of love through auditory situations prefigured by aphasic personality-objects. She holds an MFA from the Institut Kunst in Basel and is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the ZHdK in Zurich. In 2020, she founded the project space Giulietta in Basel. In 2019, she was in residence in Hangzhou, in 2018 in Berlin at the Akademie der Kunste, and in 2017 at the Tropical Lab in Singapore. In Rome, she will continue her doctoral thesis by working on a radio play about love, inspired by a radio drama by Neapolitan playwright Eduardo de Filippo, using the archives of CinecittĂ  and Radio Rai.

Roma Calling 2023/2024

  • Belloni, Jacopo (Visual arts, Performance) Jacopo Belloni (1992) is an artist living and working in Geneva. His research explores the imaginative, narrative and symbolic diversions that societies adopt to cope with states of crisis. His sculptural works and performances refer to vernacular culture, a symbolic and superstitious universe that continues to resonate in our contemporary world. He holds a Work.Master at HEAD – GenĂšve (2021) and has exhibited in various institutions and spaces such as Kunsthalle, Berne; Forde, Geneva; Aargauer Kunsthaus, Aarau; Palazzo Re Rebaudengo, Guarene (TO). In Rome, he will continue his research into the traditions of the Italian rural world as a way of dealing with states of crisis and ‘cultural apocalypse’, influenced by the theories of anthropologist Ernesto de Martino.
  • Bernasconi, Valentine (Digital visual studies) Valentine Bernasconi (1994) is a Phd student in the field of Digital visual studies at the University of Zurich. In her research project, she seeks to understand the implications and meanings of hand gestures in early modern paintings, also addressing the complex role of the computer tool in the practice of art history. She holds an engineering degree in Digital Humanities from EPFL and studied computer science and art history at the University of Fribourg. In Rome, she will continue her research between computer science and art history in a dialogue between historians, technicians and institutions involved in these processes.
  • Delarue, ChloĂ© (Visual arts) ChloĂ© Delarue (1986) is an artist living and working in Geneva. Through the complex relationships of digital technologies with the living, she observes the alteration of reality disrupting our systems of representation and identification. Her work has been exhibited in institutions such as the MusĂ©e des Beaux-Arts de la Chaux-de-Fonds, Kunsthaus Langenthal, Salle de Bains in Lyon and the Villa du Parc in Annemasse, Windhager von Kaenel in Zurich and most recently at the frank elbaz gallery in Paris. In Rome, she will realise a new series of works reflecting on the notions of reproducibility and simulation by collecting representative fragments of the mythical and contemporary history of the city, through the use of photogrammetry.
  • Ellis, Anthony (Classics) Anthony Ellis (1986) is a researcher at the Institute of Classical Philology at the University of Bern. His research focuses on ancient religion and cross-cultural encounters. He studied at Oxford and Edinburgh, where his PhD thesis (2013) explored the role of the gods in early Greek historical thought. In Rome, he will reconstruct how the infamous Byzantine philosopher and heretic, Gemistos Pletho, rewrote ancient historical texts and trace Pletho’s influence on the Greek refugees who fled to Rome in the wake of the Ottoman conquests.
  • Holliger, Simone (Visual arts) Simone Holliger (1986) is an artist living and working in Basel. Through an experimental and process-based approach, she creates large-scale sculptures. Against the backdrop of a stereotypically male sculptural convention, Holliger’s sculptural position oscillates between a sense of tradition and formal rupture, vertical force and organic finesse. In 2014, she graduated from  HEAD – GenĂšve. She won the Swiss Art Award in 2019 and completed residencies in Berlin (2020) and at the CitĂ© Internationale des Arts in Paris (2016). She has had solo exhibitions at Kunsthaus Baselland, Muttenz (2023); MusĂ©e des Beaux-Arts La Chaux-de-Fonds (2022); and La BF15 in Lyon (2022), among others. Together with other artists she has been running the off-space PALAZZINA in Basel since 2019, which focuses on the interweaving of living and exhibition space. In Rome, she will research on content, forms and materials with reference to the urban and architectural space of the city.
  • Marie d’Avigneau, Jade (Art history) Jade Marie d’Avigneau is a PhD candidate at the University of Lausanne. She studied Art history and Philosophy at the Universities of Florence, Munich and Lausanne. She received a faculty prize from the Dante Alighieri Society for her master’s thesis. She has been in residence in Naples to work on her doctoral thesis on 16th century Neapolitan sculpture. In Rome, she will continue her research and examine several aspects of Neapolitan sculpture, social history and artistic exchanges during this period.
  • Maurer, Jacqueline (Art history, Cinema) Jacqueline Maurer (1984) is an art historian and a film scholar, critic and curator. In her research she examines interrelations between film, architecture, urban environments and rural landscapes. She was Postdoc Fellow at the Collegium Helveticum, research assistant at the FHNW and at the gta at ETH ZĂŒrich, and art mediator at Kunstmuseum Basel. Jacqueline studied art history and German philology in Basel and London and holds a PhD from the Department of Film Studies at University of Zurich. In Rome, she will continue with her interdisciplinary research about rural landscapes and cinema.
  • Meier, LĂ©a Katharina (Visual arts, Performance) LĂ©a Katharina Meier (1989) is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Lausanne. Through performance, textiles, drawing, video and writing, her artistic practice develops narratives in which failure, shame and ridicule are forms of healing. In 2021, she won the Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the Swiss Performance Award with the play Tous les sexes tombent du ciel. In 2018 and 2019, she was in residence in the spaces of Faap and PivĂŽ in SĂŁo Paulo (BR). She has shown her work in theaters and arts spaces such as the MusĂ©e Cantonal des Beaux Arts de Lausanne, Arsenic – Centre d’art scĂ©nique contemporain, TU-ThĂ©Ăątre de l’Usine and Tunnel Tunnel. She is a member of the translation collective BRASA. In Rome she will continue her research into the notions of shame, dirt and cleanliness as opposed to a context laden with the presence of the history of Christianity and the history of Fascism.
  • Paolino, Camilla (Art history) Camilla Paolino (1991) is a researcher and curator. She is currently doing a PhD at the University of Geneva, exploring the material nexus between reproductive and artistic work articulated in 1970s Italy. In parallel, she co-runs the web-radio channel CANALE MILVA and the artist-run space One gee in fog in Geneva, and collaborates on the 7 Winds research project at Kunsthalle Bern. Other recent projects have been presented at PALAZZINA (Basel, 2021); Le Commun (Geneva, 2021); Sonnenstube (Lugano, 2020); Fri Art Kunsthalle (Freiburg, 2020); Centre d’Art Contemporain d’Yverdon-les-Bains (2019). In Rome, she will pursue her PhD thesis to shed light on the contribution of art to the struggle for the reconfiguration of the traditional sexual division of labour and for the denaturalisation of women’s reproductive work.
  • Pecile, Veronica (Law, Social sciences) Veronica Pecile (1989) conducts research between law, critical theory and theories of spatio-temporality. Since 2023 she has been an affiliated researcher at the Lucernaiuris-Institut fĂŒr Juristische Grundlagen of the University of Lucerne. Previously, she was a Postdoc Fellow at the Collegium Helveticum (Zurich) and at Harvard Law School. She holds a PhD in Law and Social sciences from EHESS (Paris) and a Master’s degree from Sciences Po (Paris). In Rome, she will work with institutions and artistic platforms to investigate the legal techniques and discourses through which the Italian colonies were established.
  • Sanchez, Mia (Visual arts) Mia Sanchez (1988) is an artist living and working in Basel. Her work explores the social structures and shifts between the personal and the public through the formats of video, photography, and sculpture. She holds a Master’s degree from the Institut Kunst (FHNW) in Basel and her work has been exhibited in several institutions, such as Der Tank, Basel; Stadtgalerie, Bern; Istituto Svizzero, Milan. In 2020, she received the Basel-Berlin Stipendium from the Berlin Academy of Arts and in 2022 she received the Swiss Art Awards. She co-initiated the artist-run space Riverside. In Rome, Mia will explore the impact of urban space on leisure time through a film-based work. 
  • Scheidegger, Sarina (Performance) Sarina Scheidegger (1985) is an artist and writer living and working in Basel. Collaboration is one of the fundamental aspects of her artistic research and she often works with other artists, performers and musicians in joint formats. Performance, printed matters and ceramics are regularly combined in her projects overlapping with other disciplines. She holds a Master’s degree from the Hochschule der KĂŒnste Bern (HKB) and has received several international fellowships and awards, including the FLORA 2018 residency in BogotĂĄ from Pro Helvetia’s Coincidencia programme. Her work has been exhibited in several institutions, such as Istituto Svizzero in Rome; Museo de la Inmigracion, Buenos Aires; Kunstmuseum Basel, Raven Raw Gallery, London, Ausstellungsraum Klingental, Basel. In Rome, she will develop new works that explore the relationship between amphorae and the current debates on (hydro)feminism.
  • Wolf, Anna-Lena (Ethnology) Anna-Lena Wolf (1984) is an anthropologist with a thematic focus on legal anthropology and the anthropology of religion. She is currently working as a Postdoc researcher and lecturer at the Institute for Social and Cultural Anthropology at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. In 2018, she completed her PhD on changing conceptions of justice in the context of a labor law reform on Indian tea plantations at the University of Bern. She spent one year as a visiting scholar at the Center for the Study of Law & Governance at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi. In Rome, she will conduct ethnographic fieldwork on the relation between legal change and divine agency in canon law in central institutions of the Roman Curia.

Roma Calling 2022/2023

  • Azzariti, Giorgio (History and theory of architecture) Giorgio Azzariti (1991) is an architect, PhD candidate at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ). He studied at the École Nationale SupĂ©rieure d’Architecture de Paris-Belleville and at the Roma Tre University, where he obtained his Master’s degree in Architecture in 2017. He has worked for international architecture firms and institutions such as Herzog & de Meuron in Basel and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In Rome he will pursue his doctoral thesis, thematically investigating the modernisation of Italian architecture through the work of architect Giuseppe Vaccaro (1896-1970) and the radical political changes of the last century.
  • Beeli, Giuanna (History) Giuanna Beeli (1994) studied history, social anthropology and Romansh at the Universities of Bern and Fribourg. As a research assistant at the Archives of the Abbey of St. Gallen, she focused on the figure of Celestino Sfondrati (1644-1696), the Benedictine prince abbot of the renowned St. Gallen monastery who received the cardinal’s hat from Pope Innocent XII in 1695. In her current thesis, funded by the SNSF, she uses Sfondrati’s kingdom to examine, from a social, cultural and political history perspective, how religious orders and religious clergy assumed important functions in early modern Catholic societies through symbolic-communicative interconnections and practices. In Rome she will explore how the Roman Curia and the Tridentine reform contributed to Celestino Sfondrati’s cursus honorum.
  • Cardellini, Igor (Performance, visual arts) Igor Cardellini (1983) lives in Lausanne and works in several European countries. He studied anthropology, sociology and political science at the University of Lausanne. He is a performance maker and works within the frames of the artistic collectives CARDELLINI | GONZALEZ since 2016 and Colectivo UtĂłpico since 2019. His research focuses on power relations and the way performative situations allow their activation and subvertion. He collaborates with choreographers Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, JĂ©rĂŽme Bel and the director Émilie Charriot. He writes for several Swiss newspapers and is a member of the Belluard Bollwerk festival committee. In Rome, through queer perspectives, he will explore human monstruous figures and the political dimensions of the body, drawing inspiration from Roman statuary.
  • Hirschi, Solmeng-Jonas (Classics) Solmeng-Jonas Hirschi (1992) has been working as a post-doctoral assistant at the University of Freiburg since 2021, where he teaches ancient Greek and he is compiling the digital catalogue of the papyri preserved in the Bible and Orient Museum. He graduated in ancient Greek, Latin, history and anthropology from the University of Bern (2015). Later, he obtained a Master’s degree in linguistics and papyrology from the University of Oxford (2016), where he also completed his DPhil (2021) on the pragmatics of philosophical therapy in the letters of Epicurus, under the supervision of Professor Tobias Reinhardt. In Rome he will continue his research project De Temps en Temps – Epicure, Bergson, McTaggart, which explores the concept of time in the three philosophers’ work.
  • Hunter, Leonie (Political philosophy) Leonie Hunter (1991) studied political theory and philosophy at the Goethe-UniversitĂ€t in Frankfurt am Main, at the New School in New York City, at the École Normale SupĂ©rieure in Paris and received her doctorate from the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt with a thesis on the political dimension of Hegel’s poetics The Drama in the Political. Her latest publication is In the Sense of Materiality. Film and Society after Siegfried Kracauer (Bertz+Fischer, Berlin, 2022). In Rome she will examine the political structural change of comedy based on the work of Nanni Moretti. 
  • Jung, Sophie (Visual arts) Sophie Jung (1982) lives and works in London and Basel. She works with text, drawing, sculpture, and performance, using humour, shame, absurdity, anger, rhythm, farce, difficulty, and friendship in a constant stream of slippages. Her sculptural works consist of bodies made from both found and randomly produced elements and her approach to ‘things’, be they objects or apparitions, resides somewhere between material responsibility and wild becoming. She creates assemblages that function as slippery semioticians through whom she writes performance scripts. She has exhibited in several international institutions including E. A. Shared Space in Tbilisi, Istituto Svizzero in Milan, Casino Luxembourg, Blain Southern in London and Kunsthalle Basel. She won the Swiss Art Awards (2016 and 2019), received the Manor art award (2018) and is currently working on her first monograph with Mousse Publishing. In Rome she will look at classical antiquity to investigate the corrupting relationship between stuck cultural narratives and their visual manifestations, using found gems and detritus from the city to create new works. 
  • Koch, Tobias (Composition) Tobias Koch (1986) is a Basel and Berlin based composer and sound artist working across performance, visual arts, film, and music production. He performed his own work at the Leopold Museum Vienna, Istituto Svizzero in Rome and Milan, Centre culturel suisse, CND Paris, and various theaters throughout Europe. He previously scored works presented at MoMA New York, documenta 14, Frieze Art Fair, Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, VolksbĂŒhne Berlin, and others. His sound design and music compositions were featured in several award winning feature films and documentaries presented at Berlinale Int. Filmfestival, Cannes Film Festival, Locarno Film Festival, IFFR Rotterdam and Toronto International Film Festival. In Rome he will develop a project titled Sound Ruins, which is based on the idea of sonic architecture and listening as a sculptural-architectural process, with a particular interest in the Roman Baroque style.
  • Minnig, Val (Visual arts) Val Minnig (1991) lives and works in Zurich, where they received a Master of Fine Arts degree in 2020 from the ZHdK. Val Minnig’s installation works use simple materials, partly found on the street, to create interventions that extend throughout the exhibition space. The works create a state of fragility and often refer to their surroundings. At the same time, Val Minnig examines constructions and technical structures that reflect the tension between control and fascination in the human-animal relationship. Val Minnig looks for the possibility of breaking customary relationships and proposing different forms of encounter. Often starting from subjective feelings, they overturns conventional power relations in their work, creating real experiences. They have recently exhibited in institutions such as Kunst Halle St. Gallen, SALTS, Birsfelden. In Rome Val Minnig will continue their research on the coexistence between human and animal, with particular interest in the figures of the dog and birds in both ancient and contemporary Rome.
  • Petersmann, Marie (International Law, Ecology) Marie Petersmann (1989) is a Senior Researcher based at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. Her research focuses on non-anthropocentric normativities and modes of co-existence with nonhumans. Her work lies at the intersection of legal theory, ecological philosophy, and political ecology. She holds a PhD in International Law from the European University Institute in Florence, a Master’s degree in International Law from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, and a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from the University of Geneva. In Rome she will work with agroecological activists on practices of ‘more-than-human commoning’ as one case-study of her project on Anthropocene Legalities: Reconfiguring Legal Relations with/in More-than-human Collectives. 
  • Sugnaux, GrĂ©gory (Visual arts) GrĂ©gory Sugnaux (1989) lives and works in Fribourg. He holds a BA from EDHEA in Sierre and an MA from HKB in Bern. His work addresses the role of painting through the mediation of the exhibition system. Subverting existing pictorial codes, he rejects a certain heritage of values from the history of painting and seeks to develop alternative systems. In 2015, he received the Kiefer Hablitzel I Göhner art award and in 2019 he completed a residency at the Atelier Jean Tinguely at the CitĂ© Internationale des Arts in Paris. Over the past two years, his works have been shown in numerous exhibitions in spaces such as Last Tango and in Zurich, Display in Berlin. From 2016 to 2020, he was co-curator of the independent space WallRiss in Fribourg. In Rome he will pursue an investigation into monstrous figures through the creation of a new series of paintings and an artist’s book.
  • Torres, Stefano Rodrigo (History) Stefano Rodrigo Torres (1991) is a researcher who focuses on the study of Jesuit missions and 17th-century American chronicles, the subject of his doctoral thesis. He graduated in Religious Studies and History at the University of Lausanne. His Master’s thesis, a case of criminal and judicial history in the 18th century Chilean context, was awarded the Fritz Stolz Prize (2019) by the Swiss Society of Religious Sciences (SGR-SSSR). Stefano Rodrigo currently teaches at the Institute of History and Anthropology of Religions (IHAR), and he is part of the editorial board of the academic journal Asdiwal. Geneva Journal of Anthropology and History of Religions. He conducted research in several archives in Spain and Chile. In Rome he will further develop his research project through the archives of the Society of Jesus (ARSI).
  • Vincensini, Gaia (Visual arts) Gaia Vincensini (1992) lives and works between Geneva and Paris. In 2016 she graduated from HEAD. In her work, she creates narratives that explore the value systems shaping both art and society. She won the Manor and Kiefer Hablitzel I Göhner art awards in 2021 and completed a nine-month residency at the CitĂ© Internationale des Arts in Paris in 2020. Her work has been exhibited at MAMCO and Forde in Geneva, at the Swiss Institute in New York, at Maison d’Art Bernard Anthonioz in Nogent-sur-Marne, at Galleria Martina Simeti in Milan and at FIAC with her gallery Gaudel de Stampa. In Rome she will develop a series of works that explores the relationship between contemporary divinities and human beings.
  • von Dach, Michelle (Social anthropology) Michelle von Dach (1994) is a PhD student at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Zurich and a researcher for the European Horizon 2020 project Hummingbird. Her research aims to analyse the context of irregular migration in Italy. In Rome she will conduct ethnographic research collaborating with non governmental associations that support migrants in the urban area. Rome represents a place of passage as well as a key hub where new networks are created, information is collected, and further movements are planned. She will mainly focus on the expectations, motivations, difficulties and perspectives of migrants who experience a kind of legal limbo during their stay in the capital.

Roma Calling 2021/2022

  • Azouzi, Ilyas (History and theory of architecture) Ilyas Azouzi (1990) received an MA in History of Art from Lausanne University and an MA in History and Theory of Architecture from the Bartlett School of Architecture (UCL). Since 2018, he has been studying for his PhD at University College London, where he teaches urban geography and history. His thesis focuses on the role of architectural theory in fascist colonial policy and the manipulation of urbanism during the Italian imperial expansion (1936-1943). In Rome he continued his work on interdisciplinary postcolonial research that reflects his interest for architecture, urbanism and political and intellectual history.
  • Bridel, Caroline (Archaeology, history of Religion) Caroline Bridel (1993) holds an MA in Classical Archaeology and Sciences of Antiquity from the University of Geneva. As a PhD student at the University of Freiburg, her thesis contributes to an FSN Eccellenza research project. Her research focuses on the manufacturing processes of Christian iconography in relation to image production and texts from Late Antiquity. Through an approach combining archaeology and iconography, in Rome she continued her research on the definition of the Christian images and their contexts.
  • Chramosta, Martin (Visual arts) Martin Chramosta (1982) studied at HGK Basel. He teaches at the School of Design of Basel and is guest lecturer at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Chramosta mainly works in the field of sculpture, drawing and performance. He has been awarded a number of prizes and scholarships including the Riehen Art Prize, the Basel Art Credit and the Pro Helvetia scholarship. In Rome he started a research for a new series of sculptures focusing on artificial landscapes, created in the city, as well as Italy and the Mediterranean.
  • Gullo, Ilaria (Archaeology) Ilaria Gullo (1989) received an MA in Classical Archaeology and History of Antiquity from the University of Zurich. A PhD student in Classical Archaeology at the University of Basel, her thesis is part of the FNS Investigating Colonial Identity project. Her research deals with funeral rites in the VI century B.C. in Sibaritide (North-eastern Calabria) on the basis of finds in the Macchiabate necropolis (Francavilla Marittima, CS). In Rome she continued her project investigating the socio-cultural dynamics of that area and the identity of its community through the study of their funeral rites.
  • Jaccard, Mathilde (Art history) Mathilde Jaccard (1995) earned a BA in History of Art and Cultural Anthropology from the University of Basel and an MA in History of Art from the University of Freiburg. Her doctoral thesis at the University of Geneva is part of the FNS project De la restauration comme fabrique des origines. Une histoire matĂ©rielle et politique de l’art Ă  la Renaissance italienne. In Rome she continued her research focusing on the management of the Etruscan heritage in Italy during the XV and XVI centuries.
  • Jones, Emma Letizia (History and theory of architecture) Emma Letizia Jones (1985) received an MA from the University of Sydney, an MA from the AA School of Architecture in London and a PhD from the University of Zurich. She is a former lecturer at the Institute of History and Theory of Architecture at ETH Zurich. She is currently a post-doctoral FNS research fellow at the V&A Museum London. In Rome she worked on her project Built by the Book, which explores the 19th-century Rome of the Irishman James Alipius Goold, a patron of architecture and the first Archbishop of Melbourne.
  • Margnetti, Marta & Olivotto, Giada (Visual arts, curating) Marta Margnetti (1989) is an artist focusing on the creation of domestic geographies and imagined places that challenge one’s perception scale. Giada Olivotto (1990) is a curator and co-director of the Sonnenstube off-space, a member of PlattformPlattform and founder of Residenza La Fornace. Both inspired by the themes of magic realism and feminist practices, in Rome they worked on the project Fattucchiere: through a collaboration with artists, they implemented daily acts of resistance.
  • Masduraud, Lou (Visual arts) Lou Masduraud (1990) lives and works in Geneva, where she creates her artistic, critical and feminist work. She received an MA in Fine Arts from HEAD, Geneva, and participated in the post-graduate research programme of ENSBA, Lyon, from 2017 to 2019. Her artistic practice delves into the mechanisms of power, desire and emancipation. In Rome she developed a project on public fountains as symbols of political life.
  • Reto MĂŒller (Visual arts) Reto MĂŒller (1984) studied at the School of Horticulture in Koppigen, at the École Internationale de ThĂ©Ăątre Jacques Lecoq (Paris), and the École cantonale d’Art du Valais in Sierre. His sculptures, installations and films deal with the dichotomy between real, imaginary and mythological space. Given his interest in the alteration of the physical states of being and matter, in Rome he devoted himself to the production of new works by studying geology, architecture and Etruscan jewellery.
  • Pellegrino, Bruno (Writing) Bruno Pellegrino (1988) is the author of three books published by Éditions ZoĂ©: Comme Atlas (2015), LĂ -bas, aoĂ»t est un mois d’automne (2018), winner of the Prix Alice Rivaz, the Prix Écritures & SpiritualitĂ©s and the Prix François Mauriac of the French Academy, and Dans la ville provisoire (2021). He is a member of the literary collective AJAR. In Rome he focused on his next novel about a pianist living between Switzerland, Italy and the United States.
  • Ray, Ari (Political science) Ari Ray (1991) completed her PhD at the University of Zurich. During her PhD she was Visiting Researcher at Stanford University and at the Hertie School of Governance, besides being a Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute of Florence (2019/2020). She currently is post-doctoral researcher at the University of Geneva, with her work delving into social inequality and the development of economic policies in advanced systems. In Rome she worked on a book project exploring class representation in contemporary Italian politics.
  • Safavi, Vanessa (Visual arts) Vanessa Safavi (1980) earned her BA from ECAL, Lausanne, and her MA from HEAD, Geneva. Her work mainly revolves around sculpture and installation, but also, photography, video and sound. Her artistic practice explores the present-day identity of the human body in relation to technology. Fascinated by anatomy, neuroscience and psychoanalysis, in Rome she continued her research based on the notion of sculpture as an extension of the human body and anatomy.
  • Van Parys, Jasper (History and theory of architecture) Jasper Van Parys (1995) studied architectural engineering at the University of Ghent, winning the Royal Dutch Archaeological Association (KNOB) award with his final dissertation. He was assistant at the University of Ghent and a resident at the Belgian Academy of Rome. He is currently a PhD student at the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture at ETH Zurich. In Rome he studied how the city’s catacombs played a key role in the theorization of Catholic Church architecture in the modern era.

Roma Calling 2020/2021

  • Aleña, Camille (Visual arts) Camille Aleña (1986, Fribourg) studied at the ECAL and at the University of Art and Design in Basel and obtained an MA from the Royal College of Art in London. She creates new links between art, music, and the history of forms and media, exploring diverse strategies and approaches such as documentary, narrative, performance, and object making. She exposed in Bern, Paris, Berlin among others. In Rome she will work on the relationship between humans, and on the limit between intimacy and formality: she will apply this gaze to the figure of the tourist guide.
  • Bovet, Roxane & Mudry, Yoan (Visual arts) Roxane Bovet (1986, Geneva) is a curator, author and publisher. In her curatorial practice she creates spaces for dialogue: physical, virtual, literary, geographical, textual or imaginary ones. She tries to bring objects, people, concepts together, in order to reflect on the world. She co-founded Ă©ditions Clinamen in 2013. Yoan Mudry (1990, Lausanne) obtained an MA at the HEAD – University of Art and Design in Geneva in 2014. His practice is multidisciplinary and questions the mechanisms of circulation of images, narratives, and information in the contemporary world. His practice has led to several publications, and his works have been exhibited around Europe.Together they co-managed two contemporary art spaces in Geneva. In Rome, they will work on the project “Vogliamo tutto”, which must be nourished by a series of encounters and visits specifically linked to the capital.
  • DĂŒblin, Patrick (Art history and landscape architecture) Patrick DĂŒblin (1986, Basel) studied Art History and Philosophy in Basel and Berlin. He was a research assistant to the director of the Kunstmuseum Basel. Since 2016 he has been teaching and researching at the Institute of Landscape and Urban Studies (LUS) at ETH Zurich. He is interested in the intersections between art, architecture, landscape, and urbanism. In Rome he will continue his dissertation on the artists and architects group Stalker, whose practice is rooted in the spatial and social particularities of contemporary Rome.
  • Howald, Mathias (Writing) Mathias Howald (1979, Lausanne) obtained an MA in Literature from the University of Lausanne in 2004. He is an awarded writer who held readings in Geneva and Lausanne, and he is a founding member of the collective of writers CaractĂšres mobiles, with whom he published Au village (2019). In Rome he will focus on two complementary projects: a residency journal and his second novel, based on the spread of HIV in Swiss cities and in Europe.
  • Panzica, Aurora (Medieval philosophy) Aurora Panzica (1991, Trapani) is a historian of philosophy, she studied at the University of Trento, and at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland). Currently she is working on the reception of Aristotle’s Meteorologica into Middle-Ages universities. After focusing her research on the continental tradition in France, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, she is currently working on the reception of the treatise in Italian universities. In Rome she will analyze the manuscripts conserved into Italian libraries.
  • PRICE (Performance, theatre) PRICE (Mathias Ringgenberg) (1986, Rio de Janeiro) studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy Amsterdam before receiving an MA Performing Arts and Theater from Hochschule der KĂŒnste Bern in 2015. For PRICE, performance provides a necessary corrective, at a moment when the Internet has enhanced the cultural dominance of the image, now more easily produced and disseminated than ever before. The artist’s body not only acts as a crucial point of orientation for navigating the practice, but also reminds of the material register crucial to identity, emotion, and communication. In Rome he will consider both Rome and Istituto Svizzero as potential stages.
  • Rolle, Alessandra (Greek and Latin philology) Alessandra Rolle (1982, Florence) received her PhD in Latin Literature from the University of Florence in 2011. She was a postdoc researcher at the University of Lausanne, and she worked in Pisa, London and Toronto as well. She is currently MaĂźtre Assistant at the University of Lausanne and she is author of various publications. In Rome she is conducting a research project that consists in the production of an annotated edition of the surviving fragments of Varro’s Antiquitates rerum divinarum.
  • Scotto, Giulia (Urban studies) Giulia Scotto (1985, Turin) obtained an MA in Architecture of the City at the University of Venice in 2011. She worked as an architect, urban planner, and researcher in Zurich and in Rotterdam, as well as a consultant for urban and territorial projects. Since 2017 she has been a research assistant at the Department of Urban Studies at the University of Basel. In Rome she will work on her doctoral thesis on the architecture and infrastructure of ENI in sub-Saharan Africa and on a documentary on the Agip Motel in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
  • Strazzeri, Victor (Political science) Victor Strazzeri (1985, SĂŁo Paulo) has a BA in Social Sciences from the Pontifical University of SĂŁo Paulo and an MA in Social Work from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He completed a PhD in Political Science at the Freie UniversitĂ€t Berlin in 2017. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Historical Institute of the University of Bern, where he is now an associated researcher. In Rome he will investigate the dialog between communists and feminists in 1970s Italy.
  • Tedder, Geraldine (Curating) Geraldine Tedder (1986, Zurich) is a curator and art critic. In her curatorial practice, Tedder focusses on more fleeting exhibition formats, on the continuation of themes through various media, and on collaborating with others. She is interested in experimenting with more poetic, embodied language, in finding new metaphors for theoretical complexes, in mixing genres such as autobiography and theory – approaches that are frequently aligned with feminist and/or queer practices. In Rome she will work on a collection of short texts, all of which connect to the city and/or Italy in different ways.
  • Tomiyasu, Hayahisa (Photography) Hayahisa Tomiyasu (1982, Kanagawa, Japan) studied photography at Tokyo Polytechnic University and at Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig. He teaches at the ZĂŒrcher Hochschule der KĂŒnste and his works have been shown around the world. In 2018, his work TTP won the First Book Award by MACK. His project concerns the question of how we perceive the passing of time more consciously by seeing photographies: in Rome he will collect numbers in public space, and he will try to make a count down work out of them.
  • Wheeler, Ginny (Archaeology) Ginny Wheeler (1991, Bern) majored in European Studies at Amherst College (Massachussets, USA). After an MA of Philosophy in Classical Archaeology at the University of Oxford, she began her PhD at the University of Bern. In Rome she will work on her doctoral thesis, which aims to go beyond the traditional parameters of Roman fountain studies, by considering not only architectural design, but also urban context, social interaction, and sensory experience in order to come as close to the ancient experience as the surviving archaeological remains allow.

  • Bramanti, Armando (Assyriology)Armando Bramanti (1989, Palermo), took a BA in History (2010) and an MA in Archaeology at Sapienza – University of Rome (2012); he then obtained a PhD in Assyriology in a joint program between Sapienza and Friedrich-Schiller-UniversitĂ€t Jena (2017). After several pre-doc and postdoc research stays in Italy, Germany, Spain, and US, he worked at the University of Geneva on a research project dealing with cuneiform paleography (Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships – ESKAS 2018/2019). His research at Istituto Svizzero will focus on the historical geography of lower Mesopotamia in the third millennium BCE. He is also preparing for publication his doctoral dissertation on land management in Early Dynastic Mesopotamia.
  • Bruckner, Johanna (Visual art)Johanna Bruckner (1984, Vienna) took a MA in Fine Arts from the Hochschule fĂŒr Bildende KĂŒnste (HFBK) in Hamburg. Recent exhibitions include: 57th Venice Biennale, Despar Cinema Teatro; CAC – Centre d’Art Contemporain (Geneva) (2019); Galerie EIGEN+ART Lab (Berlin); 16th Venice Biennale, International Architecture Exhibition; Galerie Reflector Contemporary (Bern); Deichtorhallen Hamburg; Sammlung Falkenberg (Hamburg) (2018); Migros Museum fĂŒr Gegenwartskunst (Zurich), KW – Institute for Contemporary Art (Berlin) (2017); the Museum of Contemporary Art Villa Croce (Genoa) (2016). She has been guest lecturer at various universities and institutions, including the Bauhaus-UniversitĂ€t Weimar, the Lucerne School of Art and Design, the ZĂŒrcher Hochschule der KĂŒnste (ZHdK), the BĂątiment d’art contemporain in Geneva (BAC). Her work has been awarded numerous scholarships: she received the Hamburg Stipendium for Fine Arts (2016). Currently she is member of the Banff Center for Visual Arts in Canada and has been nominated for a College Fellow in Media Practice at Harvard University, Cambridge, USA. She teaches at the Master of Arts in Fine Arts at the ZĂŒrcher Hochschule der KĂŒnste (ZHdK) and at the Hochschule der KĂŒnste Bern HKB.
  • Dell’Era Romeo (Latin epigraphy)Romeo Dell’Era (1992, Lugano) studied Antiquities at the University of Lausanne, obtaining an MA degree in 2017. He is currently working on a doctoral thesis in Ancient History in cotutelle between the University of Lausanne and Sapienza University of Rome, for which he received a grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation. The thesis work aims to bring together the two lines of research of studies on epigraphic habit, very active since the 1980s, and studies on the Alps in antiquity. He is also preparing an edition of the Roman inscriptions of the Canton of Ticino. He is an associate researcher at the Centre for the History of the Alps (UniversitĂ  della Svizzera Italiana, Accademia di Architettura) for 2019-2020.
  • Dendena, Francesco (Modern history)Francesco Dendena (1981, Milan/Paris) studied History at the UniversitĂ  degli Studi di Milano and completed a PhD in History in 2010 in co-tutorship between the EHESS in Paris and the University of Milan. In 2012 he won the François Furet Prize, awarded by EHESS for his doctoral thesis. He is currently working on a post-doctoral project with the University of Lugano, which is part of the “Milan and Ticino (1796-1848). Shaping spatiality of a European Capital” project. In Rome he will research libraries and book policies during the Jacobin Rome (1798-1799) and study the transformations introduced by the French invasion and the subsequent republican experience on the public library system in Papal Rome.
  • Julier, Pauline (Visual art and filmaker)Pauline Julier (1981, Geneva) studied at the École Nationale SupĂ©rieure de la Photographie d’Arles I and obtained the MA SPEAP, Programme d’ExpĂ©rimentation en Arts et Politique, Science Po (Paris). Her films have been shown in contemporary art centres, institutions and festivals around the world: the Centre Pompidou (Paris); the Loop Festival (Barcelona); Visions du RĂ©el (Nyon); the Tokyo Wonder Site; the Centre d’Art Contemporain GenĂšve; the Museum of Modern Art in Tanzania; the CinĂ©mathĂšque (Toronto), and the Pera Museum (Istanbul) among others. Julier received the Prix d’art fĂ©dĂ©ral suisse in 2010. She was invited by the Fondation Pinault to participate in an exhibition at Palazzo Grassi (Venice), she had a solo exhibition at the Centre culturel suisse in Paris (CCS) in 2017; she has participated in the Biennale of Media Art in Chile in 2019, and will be part of Bruno Latour’s next exhibition at ZKM (Karlsruhe) in 2020. Pauline Julier is currently working on a new cycle of plastic research and writing her first feature film.
  • Laleg, Dominique (Art history)Dominique Laleg (1982, Schwyz/Basel) studied Art History and Philosophy and completed an MA degree at the University of Basel. In 2018 he took his PhD from eikones – Zentrum fĂŒr die Theorie und Geschichte des Bildes at the University of Basel. Since 2017 he has been working as a research assistant in Contemporary Art History at the Institute of Art History (University of Vienna) and at the Seminar on Art History at the University of Basel. His post-doc project, on which he intends to work in Rome, concerns the work of Cy Twombly in Rome (1957-1968) and, in particular, the analysis of his works in relation to postwar painting in the United States of America and Europe’s historical and cultural tĂłpoi of those years.
  • Matter, Charlotte (Art history)Charlotte Matter (1983, Lyon/Zurich) studied Art History at the University of Zurich and completed an MA degree in 2015. She is research assistant at the Institute of Art History at the University of Zurich where she coordinates the MA programme “Art History in a Global Context”. She is currently working on a doctoral thesis on plastic as a material in art in the 1960s and 1970s, with particular interest in the works of two artists who worked in Rome: Carla Accardi (1924-2014) and Laura Grisi (1939-2017). For her thesis she received a one-year scholarship—commencing September 2019—from the Bibliotheca Hertziana which supports the research project “Rome Contemporary”.
  • Meyrat, Nastasia (Visual art)Nastasia Meyrat (1991, Lausanne) studied art at the HEAD–Haute Ă©cole d’art et de design in Geneva, where she obtained an MA degree (Work.Master) in 2015. Meyrat was selected in 2018 for the Kiefer Hablitzel Göhner award, within the framework of the Swiss Art Awards. She was artist in residence at the Davidoff Art Initiative in 2017 in the Dominican Republic and at the 4th Ghetto Biennale in Port-au-Prince (Haiti) in 2015, where she worked on a cultural exchange project with her anthropologist sister. She was selected for the New Heads – Foundation BNP Paribas Art Awards in 2015, in conjunction with the group exhibition “GET OUT”, curated by Latifa Echakhch. She has exhibited at Zabriskie Point (Geneva); Urgent Paradise (Lausanne); La Placette (Lausanne); Morel art space (Lugano); Motto (Berlin); One Gee In Fog (ChĂȘne-Bougerie); Casa Quien (Santo Domingo); and Ferme de la Chapelle (Lancy). Between 2018 and 2019 she was part of Tunnel Tunnel, an independent art space in Lausanne.
  • Real Madrid alias Benenti Oriol, Bianca e Pezzotta, Marco (Visual art)The artist duo Real Madrid was founded in 2015 by Bianca Benenti Oriol and Marco Pezzotta. Bianca (1987, Turin) took her Work.Master at HEAD – Haute Ă©cole d’art et de design in Geneva in 2016. Marco (1985, Seriate) studied at Brera Academy of Fine Arts (Milan) and at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee. In 2017 the collective was chosen as finalist for the BNP Paribas Prize and invited to Sao Paulo (Brazil) by the Goethe-Institut. In 2018, the artists were awarded the Swiss Art Award in Basel and were finalists of the Bourse de la Ville de GenĂšve at the Centre d’Art Contemporain. In the same year they participated at the Research-Residency of Pro Helvetia Johannesburg and at the FAAP Foundation in Sao Paulo (Brazil).
  • Santer, Kiri (Juridical anthropology and political sociology)Kiri Santer (1991, Lausanne) studied Anthropology, Comparative Literature and Middle Eastern Studies at the Universities of Geneva and NeuchĂątel. She completed an MA degree in Anthropology and Sociology at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London in 2015. She is the current recipient of a “Doc.CH” grant (excellence funding scheme) by the Swiss National Science Foundation for her PhD in Political Sociology and Legal Anthropology at the University of Bern. In Rome she will carry out research for her dissertation on the emergency of the Libyan Coast Guard and the recent transformation of the external border of the European Union in the central Mediterranean. Since 2017 she has been editorial assistant at the Anthropological Theory journal.
  • Steiner, Urs August (Visual art)Urs August Steiner (1980, Uznach SG/Zurich) studied at the ZĂŒrcher Hochschule der KĂŒnste (ZHdK) (Zurich), at the California College of the Arts (San Francisco) and completed an MA degree in Fine Arts at the ECAL École cantonale d’art de Lausanne in 2011. He has exhibited at the Splatterpool (New York), Lokal-int (Biel), Grand Palais (Bern), Museum of Contemporary Art – MoCA (Shanghai), Des Pacio (San JosĂ©, Costa Rica), Kunsthaus Glarus, DienstgebĂ€ude (Zurich), Nextex (St. Gallen), Bombay Beach Biennale (California), Last Tango (Zurich). He was artist in residence in 2015 in Shanghai (Pro Helvetia) and in 2012 in New York (Residency Unlimited). In 2018 he won the Werkbeitrag Pro Helvetia, in 2018 and 2016 the Werkbeitrag Kanton St. Gallen, and in 2014 the Fokus-Preis Kunsthaus Glarus.
  • Wenger, AnaĂŻs (Visual art, writing)AnaĂŻs Wenger (1991, Geneva) studied Art at the HEAD – Haute Ă©cole d’art et de design in Geneva, where she obtained an MA degree (Work.Master) in 2017. She has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in 2018 at the LIYH & Art GenĂšve; Kunstmuseum Langenthal; ThĂ©Ăątre du Loup/La GraviĂšre (Geneva); Espace Libre (Biel); Centre d’Art Contemporain (Geneva); Centre d’art NeuchĂątel; One gee in fog (ChĂȘne-Bougerie); FriArt (Fribourg); Tinguely Museum/Kaserne (Basel); 3353 (Carouge); Alienze (Lausanne); in 2017 at the Solstice Art Center (Navan); Badenfahrt (Baden); Zabriskie Point (Geneva).   • De Franco, Oscar alias De La Fuente Oscar De Franco (Visual artist) Oscar De Franco (1986, Zurich) took a Master in Fine Arts degree at the ZĂŒrcher Hochschule der KĂŒnste in 2013, and as a visiting student he attended the course of Thomas Zipp at UniversitĂ€t der KĂŒnste Berlin. He has presented work in solo and group shows at Binz 39 (Zurich), Helmhaus (Zurich), Wasserkirche (Zurich), Kunstmuseum Bern (Bern), Galerie Gregor Staiger (Zurich), Kunsthalle St. Gallen (St. Gallen), Haus Konstruktiv (Zurich), Cabaret Voltaire (Zurich), Kunsthalle Bern (Bern) and other locations. He has received many prizes and study grants, including Atelierstipendium Binz 39 (2014-16) and Credit Suisse Förderpreis Video Kunstunstmuseum Bern (2012). He has also been a resident at Stavanger (Norway).
  • Meier, Rahel (History) Rahel Meier (1985, Zurich) is a medievalist. She studied History of Art, History and Archaeology of the Middle Ages at the University of Zurich, Paris and Basel. She was awarded the Förderpreis fĂŒr Kunstwissenschaft by the Alfred Richterich Foundation for an extract of her thesis. At Istituto Svizzero in Rome, she is completing her dissertation on the creation and dissemination of the legend of the Holy Land, which is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (with contribution by Doc.CH). She was a guest of the KHI-MPI in Florence.
  • Meier, Robin (Musician, visual artist, performer, videomaker) Robin Meier (1980, Zug) took a degree in cognitive philosophy at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris in 2007, and studied at the Center for New Music & Audio Technologies, University of California and the Conservatoire National de Region de Nice, where he graduated in 2005. His works have been featured in group and solo shows in various institutions and biennials, including the 11th Shanghai Biennale (Shanghai), Palais de Tokyo (Paris), Gare de l’Est (Nuit Blanche – Paris), Volkshaus (Art Basel, Basel), MusĂ©e d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (Paris), Arsenal Gallery (New York). He was assigned the Kantonaler Kulturförderpreis of the Canton of Zug in 2016, and was nominated for the Prix Fondation Richard, Paris, in 2015.
  • Mure-Ravaud, Lora (Writer and filmmaker) Lora Mure-Ravaud (1993, Bordeaux) has a degree in philosophy and literature (Lyon, 2012). In 2017 she completed the Bachelor programme at the school of cinema of the École cantonale d’art de Lausanne. She has made several short films: Soleil cou coupĂ© (2017, broadcast by RTS), Valet noir (2017, produced for Alva Film), CĂŽtĂ© cour (2016, presented at the Locarno Festival), Joconde (2015, presented at Locarno Festival and acquired by ARTE). For Valet noir she won the Prix de la relĂšve at Solothurner Filmtage (2018) and the prize for best short film of the Festival of Winterthur (2017).
  • Petracca, Enrico (Economic sciences) Enrico Petracca (1983, Lausanne) studied economics at Bocconi University in Milan and the University of Bologna, where he also completed a doctorate in history and philosophy of science in 2014. During the academic year 2017-18 he has conducted post-doctoral research at the Institut de Recherches Économiques (IRENE) of the University of NeuchĂątel. His interests include the history and methodology of economic theories. The research he intends to conduct in Rome has to do with the history of “idiosyncratic” economic thought, thus defined because it cannot be analysed through traditional historical categories. In this sense, his research attempts to introduce new categories, related to the study of certain personalities and singular theories in the history of economic thought.
  • Pönitz-Hunziker, Christine (Archaeologist) Christine Pönitz-Hunziker (1983, Bern) studied history and archaeology of the Mediterranean at the University of Bern. In 2014 she completed a Master in archaeology of the Mediterranean and ancient history at the University of Bern. Since 2015 she has worked on her doctoral thesis on the ceramics of the necropoli of Via dei Greci and the Cimitero Sud of Crotone, as a mirror of the socio-cultural and economic development of the Italian city in the 3rd and 4th centuries BC. In Rome she will conduct research for the doctoral thesis supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation, with the scientific collaboration of Timothy Pönitz, also a Swiss Institute fellow, whose project focuses on archaeological study of the ancient city of Crotone in Calabria.
  • Pönitz Timothy (Archaeologist) Timothy Pönitz (1989, Geneva) studied classical archaeology and Egyptology at the University of Geneva. In 2014 he completed a Master in classical archaeology at the University of Geneva. Since 2016 he has worked on his doctoral thesis on the necropoli of Via dei Greci and the funerary context of Crotone. In Rome he will conduct in-depth research in scientific collaboration with Christine Pönitz-Hunziker, also a Swiss Institute fellow, whose project also focuses on archaeological study of ancient Crotone in Calabria.
  • Spina, Davide (Architect) Davide Spina (1983, Rome/Zurich) is of Italian origin and presently lives in Zurich, where he is completing a doctorate at ETH Zurich, Institute for the Theory and History of Architecture (gta). His research project consists of a monographic thesis on the Roman real estate contractor SocietĂ  Generale Immobiliare (SGI). Davide has a degree in architectural sciences from UniversitĂ  Roma Tre, and a Master in architectural history from Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London (UCL). He has received study grants at Yale University and Canadian Centre for Architecture (Montreal), and has been a Visiting PhD Scholar at Columbia University, as well as teaching at ETH. Some of his essays have been published in AA Files, the magazine of the Architectural Association of London.
  • Wagner, Laurence (Programming, writing, performing arts research) Laurence Wagner (1984, Lausanne) attained a Master of Arts at the Haute Ecole d’Art et de Design de GenĂšve in 2011, after completing a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Lausanne in 2008. Since 2014 she has worked at TU-ThĂ©Ăątre de l’Usine in Geneva as director of programming, communication and press relations, and co-director of cultural mediation. She was a member of Corodis – Commissione Romande de Diffusion des Spectacles in 2016-17, and she has worked on various projects as a cultural mediator. She works for ZĂŒrcher Theater Spektakel in Zurich, teaches at Manufacture Haute Ă©cole des arts de la scĂšne in Lausanne, and develops various projects in the performing arts as an independent curator.
  • Wertenbroek, Manon (Visual artist) Manon Wertenbroek (1991, Lausanne) is of Swiss-Dutch origin; she took a Bachelor of Arts in photography in 2014 at the École cantonale d’art de Lausanne. Since then, Wertenbroek has shown works in galleries in Holland, Belgium, Italy and France, and also at Art Basel, the Foam Museum in Amsterdam, and the Swiss Institute in Rome. Her work has been featured in the publications Guardian, Mousse, British Journal of Photography, Foam Magazine, i-D, LensCulture and many others. In January 2017 she had her first solo show at Coalmine, Wintherthur. That same year she was assigned the Swiss Art Award by the Federal Office of Culture.
  • Wooldridge, Ian (Visual artist) Of English origin, Ian Wooldridge (1982, Zurich) now resides in Zurich and is a PhD candidate in media sciences at the University of Basel. After taking a Bachelor in Fine Arts at Central St. Martins, University of London in 2004, he completed a Master degree in 2011 in history of cinema and visual media at Birkbeck College, University of London. From 2013 he has taught at the ZĂŒrcher Hochschule der KĂŒnste, in the Department of Art and Media. He has taken part in group and solo shows at the Cruising Pavilion (Venice Architecture Biennale 2018), LUX (London), Folkwang (Essen), Plymouth Rock (Zurich), Haus Konstruktiv, (Zurich), The Swiss Art Awards 2017 (Basel), Mikro (Zurich), Taylor Macklin (Zurich), Le Manoir (Martigny), Coalmine (Winterthur).
  • Zuber, CĂ©lia (Art historian) CĂ©lia Zuber (1990, Geneva) took a Bachelor degree in 2013 in art history and modern French literature at the University of Geneva, and a Master in art and languages at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales of Paris in 2015. In 2013 she received the prize for young researchers of the Association Suisse des Historiens et Historiennes de l’Art (ASHHA/VKKS). In 2016-17 she taught at the University of Geneva and the VIA FERRATA of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris. In Rome she will conduct research for her doctoral thesis, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, on the theory and theology of the image in the religious work of the painter from Bologna Annibale Carracci.

  • Bobillier StĂšve (Philosophy) StĂšve Bobillier (b. 1982, Freiburg) holds a PhD in philosophy from the EHESS (Paris) after achieving from the University of Geneva a MPhil in Greek language and literature. He was assistant at the University of Freiburg and a teacher of philosophy in different schools; currently he is working on a postdoc project titled La normativitĂ© Ă©thique Ă  la fin du XIIIe siĂšcle: de la norma ecclĂ©siale au per de la conscience personnelle which focuses on the concept of ethics and moral normativity in the 13th century, and in particular on the essays of Pierre de Jean Olivi and Henri de Gand. His project has been funded by the Swiss National Fund for Scientific Research in collaboration with La Sapienza University of Rome and the Vatican Apostolic Library
  • Caltagirone Miro alias Max Usata (Musician, singer, performer, actor) Miro Caltagirone (b. 1982, Bienne) has Swiss and Sicilian origins. He is an actor and musician and since 2001 he has been lead singer of the band Puts Marie, which has so far recorded six albums and played both nationally and internationally. Miro Caltagirone plays in several other musical projects such as Mister Milano, Troika Trash and MaxSchmĂŒrzen, Meta Marie Louise and Kerouac. In 2009 he moved to New York where he completed his studies at the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute. In New York he has worked on many theatre projects with director Mathilde Schennen. He regularly collaborates with the group We Ate Lobster
  • Fusetti Sabrina (Archaeologist) Sabrina Fusetti (b. 1987, Zurich) has studied classic, prehistoric and medieval archaeology at the University of Zurich and at La Sapienza in Rome. She gained experience in the field of Italian preroman archeology (Univeristy of Zurich, 2013 – 2015) during the excavations in the towns of Spina (Ferrara, Italy) and Monte Iato (Palermo, Italy). Currently she is working at her PhD thesis entitled La ceramica indigena arcaica della Sicilia occidentale: indagini tipologiche e socioculturali sulla base dei contesti di Monte Iato, thanks to the Forschungskredit scholarship of the University of Zurich. She is recipient of the Giuseppi Nenci award for her Master’s degree dissertation
  • Gasser Mathis (Visual arts) Mathis Gasser (b. 1984, Zurich) holds a BA from the Haute Ecole d’Art et de Design de GenĂšve (Geneva) in 2010 and his Master degree in London at the Royal College of Art in 2012. His works have been shown in numerous galleries and institutions: Centre Culturel Suisse (Paris), Chewday’s (London), Kunsthaus Glarus, Centre d’Ă©dition contemporaine (Geneva), Piper Keys (London), Kunsthalle Bern, and La Salle de Bains (Lyon). In 2010 he won the ThĂ©odore Strawinsky (Geneva) award, in 2012 the Hine Award (London), in 2013 the George Foundation (Zurich), the Roldenfund (Basel), and both in 2013 and 2015 the Swiss cultural Fund (London)
  • HĂ€ni Richard (History) Richard HĂ€ni (b. 1987, Basel), has studied history and mathematics at the University of Basel for which he holds a Master of Arts (2011). In 2013 he graduated with a Master of Science in Mathematics. Since he last graduated he has been working on his PhD dissertation, which he is currently financing with his part-time teaching job at Liestal (near Basel) high school. His research focuses on studying the comparison between ancient and modern people and on the self-representations of Modernity which can be found in essays by Sperone Speroni, Benedetto Varchi, Giorgio Vasari, and Giambattista Vico. During his stay at the Swiss Institute of Rome, he will complete his PhD thesis
  • Lammer Elise (Visual arts, art critic, performer) Elise Lammer (b. 1982, Basel/Roveredo) started her career by studying at the Academy of Fine Arts of Barcelona, later she completed a Master degree in Curatorial Studies from Goldsmiths University (London). She is curator at SALTS, Birsfelden/Basel and the founder of the Kunsthalle Roveredo—a one year artist residency in the Kanton of GraubĂŒnden. Between in 2014-2016, she was a researcher at APRA, the Adrian Piper Research Archive in Berlin. As curator, artist, and writer, she has participated in exhibitions in numerous institutions as: the Schinkel Pavillon (Berlin), the Goethe Institute (Beijing, Hong Kong), South London Gallery (London), Peckham Artist Moving Image Festival (London), Autocenter (Berlin), Centro Culturel Suisse (Paris), Kunsthaus Langenthal (Langenthal)
  • Leonardi Miriam Laura (Visual arts) Miriam Laura Leonardi (b. 1985, Zurich) holds a Master of Arts in Fine Arts from ZĂŒrcher Hochschule (Zurich) after studying photography in Paris.   • Planzi Lorenzo (History) Lorenzo Planzi (b. 1984, Locarno) has studied, social communication, theology at the University of Freiburg. In 2014 he completed a PhD in contemporary history. Lorenzo Planzi is author of six books and around twenty scientific articles; his research focuses on political and religious history, on the history of international relations and resistance to totalitarianism, and also on unpublished topics such as the history of funerals and electricity. He is also member of the editorial board of the Revue Suisse d’histoire religieuse et culturelle. He is a Researcher at the Lateranense University for the Swiss National Fund for the Scientific Research.   • Rochel Johan (Philosophy, political science) Johan Rochel (b. 1983, Zurich) is a postdoc researcher in ethics and in innovation law. He is currently working at a project funded by the Swiss National Fund for Scientific Research which focuses on fair distribution of innovation, even through intellectual property. At the same time he is continuing his research on immigration ethics. Johan Rochel is an associate member of the Ethic Centre at the University of Zurich and professor in many universities, specialising in topics of ethics applied to the political sphere. He is also a researcher of think-tank foraus—Forum de politique Ă©trangĂšre and member of the Federal Commission for Childhood and Youth. He curates a blog on Le Temps
  • Schneider Christian (History) Christian Schneider (b. 1985, Niedergösgen) has studied history, English language and literature at the University of Freiburg, Berne and Durham (GB). In 2016 he completed his PhD at the University of Durham with a dissertation on Pope Clemente VIII Aldobrandini’s (1592-1605) political and juridical position and his diplomatic and ideological role. While writing his PhD, Christian Schneider taught at the University of Durham and Sunderland (GB). His project is funded by the University of Durham and from the National Swiss Fund for Scientific Research. Since January 2017 he is a postdoc Research Assistant at the University of Freiburg of “Unheilige” Machenschaften am Heiligen Stuhl? PĂ€pstlicher Nepotismus 1534 bis 1605: Methoden–Kritik–Rechtfertigungen, a project which examines symbolic, financial and political-territorial aspects of papal nepotism
  • Steinbeck Michelle (Writer) Michelle Margarethe Steinbeck (b. 1990, Basel) graduated in 2013 in literary writing in Biel and currently is studying philosophy and sociology in Basel. She is editor-in-chief at Fabrikzeitung magazine, an author and organises events. Since 2016 she is curator of Babelsprech – Internationales Forum fĂŒr junge Lyrik, which promotes young German speaking poets. Michelle Margarethe Steinbeck has published in magazines and anthologies, she has also worked at a Radio station and in theatres. In March 2016, her first novel Mein Vater war ein Mann an Land und im Wasser ein Walfisch was published. Always in 2016 she was a Fellow student at the Literary Colloquium Berlin
  • Wildberger Martina-Sofie (Visual arts, performer) Martina-Sofie Wildberger (b. 1985, Geneva/Zurich)—visual artist and performer—completed in 2011 a Master of Fine Arts at the Haute Ă©cole d’art et de design de GenĂšve (Geneva) and in 2014 a BA in History of Art from the University of Geneva. Milano Calling

The Istituto Svizzero offers two six-month residencies in Milan (from October to April) addressed to artists (visual arts, design, architecture, literature, dance, theatre and music) who have proven experience in the arts or who have completed an education (Bachelor, Master or other) and researchers doctoral/post-doctoral students (social, human, natural and other sciences). Young researchers and artists interested in developing a project that requires a residency in the capital of Lombardy are required to submit their applications by 19.01.2024.

  • Kerschbaumer, Nina (Film) Nina Kerschbaumer (1988) is a filmmaker based in Zurich. Her research focuses on the relationship between political, media, economic spaces, and criminal/terrorist acts. She holds a bachelor’s degree in visual arts and a Ph.D from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. After teaching and conducting research at ZHdK, she manages a section of the Rote Fabrik cultural center in Zurich, where she primarily focuses on cinema. In Milan, she will develop a film that stages the bombing of December 16, 1969, using reenactment scenes, documentary images of the city, and archival materials with the aim of finding an alternative form of narration for these attacks.
  • Balzan, Silvia (Architecture) Silvia Balzan (1985) is an architect and postdoctoral researcher at the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio (USI). Her research focuses on the expansion of the Milan underground from the 1950s to the 1990s, analyzing the urbanistic implications of changes made to the master plan in the 1970s. She holds a master’s degree from IUAV in Venice and ETH in Zurich and a Ph.D. from the University of Basel. In Milan, she will continue her research on the subway as a lens through which to study Milan from the post-war period to Tangentopoli in the 1990s, exploring urban, architectural, socio-economic, and political aspects.

Milano Calling 2023/2024

  • Groaz, Silvia (History and theory of architecture) Silvia Groaz (1987) is a Postdoc researcher in Architectural history funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation for a joint research project between the UniversitĂ© Catholique de Louvain and Yale University. She obtained her PhD in History and theory of architecture at EPFL Lausanne, and a Master of Art in History of architecture at the Bartlett School of Architecture in London. She was a visiting scholar at Columbia University in New York and received grants from the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Construction History Society. In Milan, she will expand her current research on the intersections between postwar art and architecture practices through the esoteric and ecological environments of Nanda Vigo.
  • Tronchin, Romain (Graphics, type design) Romain Tronchin (1996) is a graphic and type designer based in Geneva. His work mainly focuses on visual identity, custom typographic solutions and editorial design. He holds a Bachelor degree in Visual communication from HEAD–GenĂšve, (2019) and a Master degree in Type design from ECAL (2021). He collaborates with several companies, offering his practice as a graphic and type designer. Since 2021, he is assisting the degree course in Visual Communication at HEAD–GenĂšve. In Milan, he will carry on his research on football supporter’s visual culture, exploring Milan’s cultural venues and getting in direct contact with key players in the field.

Milano Calling 2022/2023

  • Iacovelli, Francesco (Astrophysics) Francesco Iacovelli (1996) obtained an MA in Astronomy and Astrophysics at Sapienza University of Rome in 2020 and he has been doing a PhD at the University of Geneva, in the Department of Theoretical Physics, within the Cosmology group. His research activity focuses on exploring the window that gravitational waves have opened on our Universe, testing the models that can describe it and looking for deviations from General Relativity. In Milan he will work with the Bicocca University to combine Cosmological and Astrophysical analysis, aiming to obtain a better estimate of the parameters that characterise both our Universe and the population of black holes it contains.
  • Zhang, Jiajia (Visual arts) Jiajia Zhang (1981) lives and works in Zurich. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the ZHdK in Zurich and she previously studied architecture at the ETH Zurich and photography at the International Center of Photography in New York. Her artistic practice lies between film, writing, sculpture and installation and uses ordinary materials as well as relational and representational spaces, political perspectives and the poetry of the everyday life. She has recently exhibited at the Swiss Art Awards 2022 in Basel, at Werkstipendium ZĂŒrich, at Helmhaus Zurich, at Kunsthalle Friart, at Kunsthaus Glarus, at Fondation Pernod Ricard in Paris and at Kunsthalle ZĂŒrich. In Milan she will analyse of two miracles: the miracle of the child and the Italian economic miracle, focusing on the interplay between family and economic growth, city development and personal events.

Milano Calling 2021/2022

  • Kouto, Rafael (Fashion, textile design) Rafael Kouto (1990) lives and works between Losone and Zurich. He studied at FHNW in Basel, and earned his MA in Fashion Matters from the Sandberg Institute of Amsterdam. He is a fashion and textile designer as well as a researcher seeking upcycling methods. He has worked for Alexander McQueen, Maison Margiela and Ethical Fashion Initiative. He has won several prizes and awards and has founded the eponymous fashion brand, of which he is the creative director. In Milan he focused on the development of participative projects linked to sustainability in textile production.
  • Spina, Davide (History and theory of architecture) Davide Spina (1983) holds an MA in History of Architecture from the Bartlett School of Architecture (UCL) and a PhD from ETH in Zurich, where he currently works as a scientific assistant. Spina was awarded the Collection Research Scholarship at CCA, was Visiting Scholar at Columbia GSAPP and a fellow at the Istituto Svizzero in Rome (2018/2019). At ETH he coordinates The Architecture of Research, an annual symposium on research methods. In Milan he continued his project exploring the links between architecture, television and politics in the age of Craxi and Berlusconi.
  • Verhaeghe, Gerlinde (History and theory of architecture) Gerlinde Verhaeghe (1986) received an MA in History of Architecture from the Bartlett School of Architecture (UCL) and an MA in Architecture from KU Leuven Faculty of Architecture, where she also worked as a research assistant. She has worked as an architect for various architectural firms in Europe and has written articles for the Belgian architecture magazine A+. Since 2018 she has conducted doctoral research at the Institute of History and Theory of Architecture of ETH, Zurich. In Milan she continued her research on the Turin architect Carlo Mollino.

Milano Calling 2020/2021

  • Aceto, Alfredo (Visual arts) Alfredo Aceto (1991, Turin) was a former student of Valentin Carron and Philippe Decrauzat at ECAL, where he is currently teaching. Aceto has exhibited his work in Milan, Glarus, Geneva, Paris. In Milan he has the opportunity to mix two regions that are very important within his practice: currently based in Switzerland, he can now reconnect with the Italian art scene.
  • Gennai, Meloe (Poetry, writing) Meloe Gennai (1986, Geneva) is a poet, writer and survivor. Meloe is an awarded and published author. They are in Milano to write their first novel On ne pleure plus; which deals with ancestry, ancestors worship and self determination. In addition, they are carrying on a research at the Teatro alla Scala di Milano where their greatgrandparents were singers and conductors; in order to understand their involvement with fascism and the impact it has had on their descendants. They are also working the movie Venus Ascending, which will deal with the position of art institutions regarding queer, disabled and artists of color

Milano Calling 2019/2020

  • De Santi Valentina (History of geography)Valentina De Santi (1982, La Spezia/Paris) studied International Development and Cooperation as well as Geography and Territorial Processes University of Bologna. In 2016 she completed a PhD. in Historical Geography at the University of Genoa in co-tutorship with the École des hautes Ă©tudes en sciences sociales in Paris where she disserted her thesis. She is currently a post-doctoral researcher of the Synergy project, part of the Swiss National Science Foundation: “Milan and Ticino (1796-1848). Shaping spatiality of a European Capital”, directed by the University of Lugano – Archivio del Moderno, in partnership with the University of Lucerne and the UniversitĂ© Paris 1 Sorbonne-PanthĂ©on of Paris. Her project analyses the contribution of military engineers in the establishment of “Milan capital” and in the construction of a new land use.
  • Knuckey, Tania Grace (Textile design and visual art)Tania Grace Knuckey (1987, Geneva) graduated from the Design Academy in Eindhoven in 2009 and the Royal College of Art in London in 2012 with a Master’s degree in Mixed Media Textiles. She has won numerous awards, amongst others the Marianne Straub Travelling Scholarship from the Royal College of Art in 2011, The Future of Beauty Award in 2012 from the International Flavours and Fragrances (IFF), and the first prize for the Best Interior Fabrics from Textprint. Tania was selected by the city of Geneva for a residency at the Maison Des Arts du GrĂŒtli from 2016 to 2019.

Milano Calling 2018-2019

  • Fueglister, Ronnie (Graphic Designer) Ronnie Fueglister (1980, Basel) is a graphic designer who studied at the Schule fĂŒr Gestaltung Basel and the ZĂŒrcher Hochschule der KĂŒnste in Zurich. His works include the design of the website of Kunsthalle Basel and books made for the artists Miriam Cahn, Bruce Nauman, Amy Sillman, Hannah Weinberger, Mike Bouchet and Paul McCarthy. He presently teaches experimental typography at Schule fĂŒr Gestaltung Basel and publishing design at Porto Design Summer School. In Milan he plans to work on the project “Type in the Public Sphere,” focusing on the “typographical character” of public space in Milan.
  • Jacomella, Marco (Architect) Marco Jacomella (1984, Chiavenna IT) is an architect and urban designer based in Zurich. He took a degree in architecture at UniversitĂ  degli Studi in Ferrara (IT), and in 2016 he took a Master in Advanced Studies in Housing at ETH Zurich. After work experiences in international studios in Denmark, Spain and Switzerland, he became a project manager at Hosoya Schaefer Architects in Zurich, specializing in projects on an urban scale and residential buildings. In 2018 he founded ITER, a studio for research on the home and territory. He is presently a doctoral candidate in Urban Planning, Design and Policies at Politecnico di Milano (IT), with a research project focusing on residential cooperatives in Zurich and their possible influence in the Italian context. His work during the residency will be on the experience of cooperatives in Milan, with a particular accent on possible exchanges with the Swiss tradition of cooperative housing.

Palermo Calling

The Istituto Svizzero offers two three-month residencies in Palermo at Palazzo Butera (from September to December) addressed to artists (visual arts, design, architecture, literature, dance, theatre and music) who have proven experience in the arts or who have completed an education (Bachelor, Master or other) and researchers doctoral/postdoctoral students (social, human, natural and other sciences).
Young artists and researchers  interested in developing a project that requires a residency in Palermo must submit their applications by 19.01.2024.

Palermo Calling 2024

  • Navarro, Aramis (Visual arts)Aramis Navarro (1991) is an artist based between St. Gallen and Zurich. Through the analysis of broader linguistic models, he observes the evolution of belief systems in contemporary society. His work has been exhibited in institutions such as the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, Kunst(Zeug)Haus, Kunsthaus Zofingen, Kutlesa Gallery, Paul Hafner Galerie, and KĂŒnstler und Projekthaus Torstrasse in Berlin, and more recently with a solo exhibition at ALTEFABRIK in Rapperswil. In Palermo, he will create a series of audio installations based on the relationship between occult spells and messages used in artificial intelligence technology.
  • MĂŒller, Dominik (Architecture)Dominik MĂŒller (1986) is an architect and researcher at ETH Zurich. He is currently studying within the SNFS-funded research project Building Identity: Character in Architectural Debate and Design, 1750-1850. He holds a degree from UdK in Berlin and has worked for several architecture firms in Berlin and Zurich. In Palermo, he will continue his research on the reception of “Gothic” architecture between national identity and Eastern projection in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Palermo Calling 2023

  • Mistireki, Aleksandra (Archaeology) Aleksandra Mistireki (1985) is a postdoc researcher and research assistant at the Universities of Berne and Basel. She studied Classical and prehistoric archaeology and Geology at ETH ZĂŒrich and the University of Zurich,  where she pursued her PhD in domestic pottery and wooden domestic architecture from the late 4th century BC in the Etruscan city of Spina. In Palermo, she will continue her research investigating the functions and meanings of domestic pottery in relation to the sanctuary of Himera in Sicily.
  • Tegegne, Ramaya (Visual arts) Ramaya Tegegne (1985) is an artist, researcher and cultural producer living and working in Geneva. Her research and practice attempt to reveal the mechanisms of a dominant model within the cultural fields and in our society by observing the economy, circulations, historicization and power relations through which they are constituted. She had solo exhibitions at KĂŒnstlerhaus in Stuttgart, Istituto Svizzero in Milan, Ludlow 38 in New York, Kevin Space in Vienna, and Fri Art Kunsthalle in Freiburg. In 2017, she launched Wages For Wages Against, a campaign for the remuneration of artists and better work conditions, which received a Swiss Art Award in 2022. In Palermo she will write a fictional short film that stems from research into the recent struggle of cleaners in Sicily. against economic exploitation.

Palermo Calling 2022

  • Hottarek, Maya (Visual arts) Maya Hottarek (1990) lives and works in Biel/Bienne. She studied visual arts at the University of the Arts in Bern and at the Institut Kunst in Basel. Her work takes the form of various media such as ceramics, film, sound and found objects. One of her core interests is articulating the complex interactions between the individual, society, economy and nature. Her most recent exhibitions include Itelleaks at N/A/S/L Mexico City, Liste Art Fair Basel, Petri dish dream at A.ROMY Gallery Zurich, Isomorphous Drip at Krone/Couronne in Biel/Bienne, Situation 1 und andere at Kunsthalle Basel, INSONNE at Sonnenstube in Lugano. In Palermo she will pursue the sculpture project Neokaryotes, which will focus on the process of researching and producing glazes, with the help of experienced local ceramists.
  • Virgillito, Lisa (History and theory of architecture) Lisa Virgillito (1996) holds a Master’s degree in architecture from the Ecole Polytechnique FĂ©dĂ©rale de Lausanne (EPFL), where she will undertake a PhD in Architecture of the City, in the Laboratory ACHT (Architecture, Criticism, History and Theory) with Professor Christophe van Gerrewey. Her academic research focuses on the preservation of the architectural and cultural heritage of the so-called ‘informal’ places and the intersection of these cultural activities with the domestic environment. Part of her thesis will be carried out in Madrid with a focus on the study of ‘corralas’, a typology of 21st century social housing that used to host theatrical performances. In Palermo she will focus on the study of a Sicilian example, the arenas, former popular open-air cinemas. The remaining fragments of these cinemas that can still be found in the city will be studied and documented through photography and architectural drawings.

Palermo Calling 2021

  • Anobile, Adaline (Performance, choreography) Adaline Anobile (1981) is a performance artist and choreographer. She completed an MA in Textile Design at La Cambre Visual Arts School of Brussels and received an MA in Choreography from the National Choreographic Center of Montpellier. Her recent works include See that My Grave is Kept Clean, presented at the far° festival in Nyon. In Palermo she delved into the notion of dream and clairvoyance to create new forms of imagery.
  • Drielsma, Marie (Archaeology) Marie Drielsma (1993) studied Classical Archaeology at the University of Geneva, where she is now working on a thesis in collaboration with the University of Catania with the support of a FNS Scholarship. In her PhD studies she focuses on Hellenistic and Roman lamps from several Sicilian sites. In Palermo her research focused on lamps found in various archaeological sites in the Western part of the Mediterranean basin.

Palermo Calling 2020

  • GuggenbĂŒhler, Nora (Art History) Nora GuggenbĂŒhler (1988, St. Gallen) studied Art History and German Linguistics and Literature at the University of Zurich. She is currently a Doc.CH fellow at the University of Zurich. Her dissertation project explores the distribution of copies of Marian images within the Spanish Empire in the XVI and XVII centuries: global interconnections of cult topographies are analyzed, regarding questions of original and copy and of center and periphery. In Palermo she will begin an in-depth research on the Madonna di Trapani, one of the most venerated miraculous objects in Sicily
  • Schild, Louis (Music) Louis Schild (1991, Lausanne) is a musician who practices composition, interpretation and improvisation. For several years he has been practicing screen printing, which he communicates with his musical and sound practice through various editorial projects. As part of his protean projects, he collaborates with other artists, thinkers and architects. He considers music under the wider filter of sound and listening and develops it together with research on critical social and political aspects. In Palermo he will focus on a comparative study of the timbres of possession rituals music in Antique Greece and in Southern Italy

Palermo Calling 2019

  • Hugonnet, Yasmine (Choreography, contemporary dance, research)Yasmine Hugonnet (1979, Lausanne/Pantin) studied at the Paris Conservatoire National SupĂ©rieur de Musique et Dance. She holds an MA degree created jointly by Codarts in Rotterdam, School of New Dance Development in Amsterdam and Institute of the arts Arnheim. In 2006 she won a residency in Ljubljana, Slovenia. She produced the trio RE-PLAY (2006) and the solo Latitudes de Pose (2007), which were shown in numerous festivals. From 2009 to 2013 she undertook a long period of research followed by the foundation in Lausanne of her company Arts MouvementĂ©s. Soon after she produces three solos: Le Rituel des Fausses Fleurs (2013), Le RĂ©cital des Postures (2014), La TraversĂ©e des Langues (2015). In 2016 she choreographed La Ronde/Quatuor at the Rencontres chorĂ©graphiques Internationales de Seine-Saint-Denis Festival and at the Venice Dance Biennale. In 2017 she participated in the Festival Commun (Arsenic, Lausanne). In 2017, Yasmine Hugonnet received the Swiss Dance Award for the solo Le RĂ©cital des Postures. She is currently working with the Vidy Theatre in Lausanne where she conceived CHRONOLOGICAL/TRIO in 2018 and will produce Seven Winters in 2020.
  • Keller, Jasmine (Writing)Jasmine Keller (1986, Endingen/Zurich) completed an MA in German Language and Literature at the University of Zurich in 2018. She has participated in numerous literary events and public readings such as the Poetry Brothel (New York and Paris) and as part of the writer’s group “Jung im All” based at the Literaturhaus Aargau (Lenzburg). In 2014 she participated in the “Industrial Radio” project of SZENART in collaboration with Radio Kanal K (Aarau). In 2018 she published the Christmas story MetallisĂ©e in the special edition of the Geldpresse of the Office for Debt Prevention of the City of Zurich. In 2013 she won the semester award from the University of Zurich for her thesis on Judith Butlers Frames of War and, in 2019, the OpenNet Schreibwettbewerb of the Solothurn Literary Days with the short story gehörnt.

Palermo Calling: Curator

Istituto Svizzero launches a residency call for a curator who will have the opportunity to stay for three months at Palazzo Branciforte in Palermo (from September to December). Applicants are required to present a research project that has a link to the Sicilian territory and draws from the collections of the Fondazione Sicilia.

Residency 2024

  • Pezza, Elisa Elisa Pezza (1998) lives and works between Turin and Zurich. Her research focuses on affirming curatorial practice as an artistic practice. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Contemporary art from the Libera UniversitĂ  di Bolzano and a master’s degree in Curatorial Studies from ZHdK in Zurich. In Palermo, she will continue her research, collaborating with the Sicilia Foundation to create a mapping of Sicily focused on mountains and their civilization, including rituals and ceremonies.

Residency 2023

  • Schalk, Antoine SimeĂŁo Antoine SimeĂŁo Schalk is a curator and researcher working on the intersections of queer and sonic cultures. Her practice tackles the links between representation, power, and violence through historical moments such as the HIV crisis. She is a co-curator at FdS Festival artistique des affects, des genres et des sexualitĂ©s in Lausanne and she obtained an MFA in Critical Curatorial Cybermedia studies at HEAD-GenĂšve. In Palermo, she intends to study the rituals tied to the religious figure of Saint Sebastian, looking at the various ways that an image is capable of stimulating community.

Residency 2022

  • Breitschmid, Laura Laura Breitschmid lives and works in Lucerne. She studied art history and economics at the University of Basel and works as assistant curator at Kunstmuseum Luzern. Until 2020 she co-directed the independent art space sic! Raum für Kunst, Lucerne, with Eva-Maria Knüsel. She is involved in the board of the IG Kultur (lobby organization for culture in Lucerne and Central Switzerland and publisher of 041 – das Kulturmagazin). Her involvement in cultural politics allows her to think of culture as a central component of society and to discuss the framework conditions of production and promotion of the arts.

Palermo Calling: Art&Science

Istituto Svizzero invites an Art & Science duo (researcher and artist) to develop a common research project connected to the city of Palermo, and/or to Sicily, and/or to the Mediterranean region, for a period of 3 months at Palazzo Sant’Elia of the Fondazione Sant’Elia.

Palermo Calling/Art & Science 2024

  • Furiassi, Fabrizio (Architecture) & Rapicavoli, Maria (Visual arts)
    Fabrizio Furiassi (1983) is an architect and researcher at the University of Basel, while Maria D. Rapicavoli (1976) is an artist based in New York. The research they will carry out in Palermo, A Sicilian theater: the bunker courtroom of the Ucciardone prison in Palermo, aims to connect and organize fragmentary data on the bunker courtroom and the maxi-trial against the mafia, which, due to natural disasters and archival neglect, is at risk of being lost. In this context, the project aims to critically examine and artistically reconstruct the history of the courthouse architecture in relation to its political history in order to preserve its memory and make it accessible to a broader public.

Open call for artists

For the Art&Science residency / ON FORESTS, Istituto Svizzero collaborates for the first time with the Wyss Academy for Nature at the University of Bern on the topic “The true value of forests” based on the initiative “Dialogues with Purpose (WAD)”.  This residency allows two artists to participate in global-level discussion on biodiversity, climate change and land use.

  • Arimalala, Antsa (Sound, Visual arts)Antsa Arimalala (1992), also known as Encoder Experiment, is a unique artist on the Malagasy contemporary music scene, composing and performing electronic music by using the creative software Ableton Live. He plays Synthwave, a musical and artistic genre inspired by Western culture in the 1980s. Encoder Experiment also explores the sounds of Madagascar, including sounds coming from local communities, for experimental projects. In 2023, he won the Art and Biodiversity competition for cultural projects with his Origins project, a sound exploration in the Vohimana Reserve to create an EP (extended play) album of four songs. In 2024, he is being hosted by Projet Ony, an association founded by the French artist Orelsan, to continue his sound exploration in southern Madagascar.
  • Baumgartner, Alexandra (Visual arts)
    Alexandra Baumgartner (1991) is an artist based in Biel/Bienne. She uses various forms of storytelling while building on photography as a key tool within her research-led practice. Her latest works expand on sound, gardening, sculpture, public walks and food in response to a multifaceted world of intra-actions between plants and humans. Alexandra Baumgartner received her BA in Camera Arts from the Lucerne School of Art and she is currently studying for her MA in Social Anthropology and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Bern. Currently Alexandra is developing Seed Carriers, a transdisciplinary audio-documentary series and exhibition format on seed diversity and seed sovereignty.


Summer Schools

The Istituto Svizzero hosts researchers from universities and institutes of higher education at Villa Maraini in the period July−August. The universities and institutes of higher education concerned are required to submit a multidisciplinary project often linked to Rome and its cultural heritage.
This programme is born out of collaboration between the Istituto Svizzero, the swissuniversities association and the Conférence des recteurs des Hautes écoles suisses (Council of Chancellors of Swiss Bodies of Higher Education).
