Setting in Motion generates an experimental, performative moment in the exhibition spaces of Villa Maraini. Simone Holliger invites dancer and choreographer Adriana Borriello and electroacoustic musician Edoardo Maria Bellucci to interact with the shapes, figures and ideas of her sculptural practice. Movement is juxtaposed with stillness, robustness and vulnerability meet. The proposed open ensemble creates an intimate as well as collective experience of the body in space.

Biographies

Dancer, choreographer and pedagogue, Adriana Borriello graduated from the National Academy of Dance and BĂ©jart’s Mudra in Brussels. Since 1986, when she founded her first company in France, she has been pursuing an articulate independent artistic activity that is divided between choreography, pedagogy, and external collaborations. Her choreographic work focuses on the relationship between sound and movement that has developed in parallel with an anthropological vision of the body. Currently, Adriana Borriello is the artistic director of AB Dance Research in Rome and the three-year training program for dancers and choreographers Da.Re. Dance Research.

Edoardo Maria Bellucci is an electroacoustic musician, performer, and a professional sound engineer and sound designer based in Rome. He graduated from the master’s degree course in Electronic Music Composition at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory of Rome and right now he’s professor of electroacoustics and acoustical engineering at the G. Nicolini Conservatory in Piacenza. As a composer he’s specialized in contemporary electroacoustic and instrumental composition, including works such as film soundtracks, art installations and sonic sculptures; as a performer he’s active in the world of musical improvisation and extemporary composition. He’s moreover founder and owner of Diacronie Lab, a music studio and laboratory for contemporary music and sonic art research and development, with which he recently inaugurated the affiliated record label “DIACRONIE media“.

Simone Holliger (1986) is an artist living and working in Basel. Through an experimental and process-based approach, she creates large-scale sculptures. Against the backdrop of a stereotypically male sculptural convention, Holliger’s sculptural position oscillates between a sense of tradition and formal rupture, vertical force and organic finesse. In 2014, she graduated from HEAD – Genève. She won the Swiss Art Award in 2019 and completed residencies in Berlin (2020) and at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris (2016). She has had solo exhibitions at Kunsthaus Baselland, Muttenz (2023); Musée des Beaux-Arts La Chaux-de-Fonds (2022); and La BF15 in Lyon (2022), among others. Together with other artists she has been running the off-space PALAZZINA in Basel since 2019, which focuses on the interweaving of living and exhibition space.
In Rome, she will research on content, forms and materials with reference to the urban and architectural space of the city.
