Velázquez, Tiziano e le Metamorfosi di Ovidio
Opening keynote by Victor Stoichita, Université de Fribourg, of the international conference
Trans-forming between the ancient and the modern: metamorphosis in literature, art, science, and European thought.
The concept of metamorphosis, which in German studies refers back to Goethe and his natural science research, is a notion rich in implications and nuances, involving various disciplines and requiring a comprehensive approach. Metamorphosis, in this sense, serves as a programmatic indicator to understand transformation, both conceptually and anthropologically. It is also a highly relevant concept that can help address the pressing issues of our time, particularly in its redefinition of the relationship between subject and nature, and between nature and culture, as articulated over the millennia. More broadly, within this complex web of references and genealogical layers, we find the enduring and fertile contrast between morphology and history, or, ultimately, between form and becoming.
To reframe these connections in the fields of literature, thought, arts, and sciences, the international conference Transforming Between the Ancient and the Modern: Metamorphosis in Literature, Art, Science, and European Thought gathers scholars from different backgrounds to explore that “secret law” – as Goethe famously put it – that governs the similarities and differences among forms.
The complete program of the conference is available here (ITA).
In collaboration with Sapienza University of Rome and Istituto Italiano di Studi Germanici.
