Law and Territory
Economic and social processes and the construction of agrarian landscapes
The international conference focuses on the analysis of the legal regime to which, in the course of ancient, modern and contemporary history, conquered, occupied and annexed territories were subjected by different subjects – peoples, nations, city communities.
The wide span of time considered allows for an interdisciplinary dialogue between experts in Roman law, positive jurists and historians from Italian and Swiss universities. Theory and practice, past and present are compared to question the strategies of lawmakers to define and regulate acquired, occupied and/or conquered territories on their management by administrators and officials.
Throughout history, the indissoluble and very close relationship between material forms, production processes and political lordship has often been evident: from antiquity, to the Middle Ages, to contemporary times, characterized by initiated globalization.
Thus, that of the legal regime of territories is a topic that allows one to range from ancient to contemporary law, offering numerous insights for scholars from different fields; for this reason, the initiative intends to involve Italian and international legal historians, Romanists, internationalists, Europeanists, as well as professors and researchers dealing with constitutional, public and comparative law.
The event is organized by Sapienza University of Rome and the University of Zurich.
