Swiss Talks #2
Corpo e Costruzione
With Armando Ruinelli and Miriam Cahn
Moderated by Francesca Chiorino
«On the outside the building rather represents Armando’s ideas, but on the inside it speaks of me as a feminist. My mother was very talented, she drew. But in the end she was just a wife who allowed Mr Professor to work. That’s why I knew from the start that my artist’s home had to be essential: a bed, a table, something to cook with. My models have always been the shepherds in the alpine pastures. I have always lived and worked in one space. I need temporariness».
The words of Basel-based artist Miriam Cahn reveal the spirit with which she entrusted Armando Ruinelli with the project for her house/atelier/warehouse in Stampa, at the foot of the mountains of Val Bregaglia.
Swiss Talks. Architecture VS Art
Swiss Talks is a series of talks dedicated to the orientations of contemporary architecture in Switzerland, now in its seventh edition.
Three evenings during 2023 are dedicated to intersections between architecture and art, from the Alpine valleys historically and geographically connected to Italy, such as Engadina and Val Bregaglia, in an imaginary descent will lead towards the Venice lagoon, in conjunction with the Biennale. How does an art museum age? How to spatially enhance a large art collection? What does it mean to design an atelier to house an artist’s work?Â
The request has been made to the CNAPPC for the recognition of 2 CFP for architects for this initiative.
A project by Istituto Svizzero and CasabellaFormazione, curated by Francesca Chiorino.
In collaboration with ProViaggi Architettura.
Biographies:
Armando Ruinelli (1954 Soglio, Val Bregaglia), after his apprenticeship, he worked as a construction draughtsman in Zurich, then founded his architectural practice in Soglio in 1982, which he has run since 2000 with his partner Fernando Giovanoli. He is a member of the Swiss Werkbund, the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects (SIA) and the Federation of Swiss Architects (BSA) and has served on various commissions, committees and boards. He has taught at the University of Applied Sciences in Biberach an der Riss (D), the University of Applied Sciences in Kaisernslautern (D) and the HTW in Chur. Since 2019, he has been a lecturer in architecture and planning at the University of Applied Sciences GraubĂĽnden. His architectural work has been awarded international prizes and has been the subject of various publications and exhibitions in Switzerland and abroad.
Miriam Cahn (1949, Basel) lives and works in Stampa, Val Bregaglia. Miriam Cahn studied at the Schule fĂĽr Gestaltung Basel from 1968 to 1975. At the centre of the artist’s concerns is the position of women in today’s society and their ongoing worldwide struggle for fundamental rights and equality. Many works challenge clichĂ©s about gender roles, in particular the perception of femininity and masculinity, while others consider contemporary migrations, in which women and children are particularly vulnerable. Cahn’s art is a daily exercise in consciousness that results in work that confronts viewers with the most pressing issues of our time. Significant recent solo exhibitions include Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2023); Palazzo Castelmur, Press (2021); Sifang Art Museum, Nanjing (2020); the touring exhibition at Kunstmuseum Bern / Haus der Kunst, Munich / Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw (2019); Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid (2019); Kunsthaus Bregenz (2019). The artist has also participated in La Biennale di Venezia (2022), Baltic Trennial 13, Vilnius and Riga (2018), the 21st Biennale of Sydney (2018) and documenta 14, Kassel and Athens (2017).
Francesca Chiorino is curator of Swiss Talks 2023, architect and editor of Casabella.
