Several initiatives in recent years have placed the Tevere at the center of debates concerning its eventual bathability in terms of safety, hygiene, and services. Across the border, in several cities in Switzerland, rivers are an integral part of urban leisure facilities, natural and bathing places that lap up buildings, places of social relevance that allow people to spend moments of relaxation in the heart of the city.
Barbara Buser, in her role as founder of the baüburo in situ studio and curator of the exhibition ‚Swim City‘ (Basel, Swiss Architecture Museum 2019), will explore some of these Swiss and international experiences.
The second part of the evening will be joined by two Italian designers – Jacopo Ammendola and Giovanni Romagnoli – working on issues of public space to open a discussion on the Roman situation, the relationship nature city and also the reuse of areas according to their relationship with the river.
Swiss Talks. Architecture VS Territory
Swiss Talks is a series of talks dedicated to the orientations of contemporary architecture in Switzerland, now in its eighth edition.
Three evenings during 2024 are aimed at investigating the intersections between architecture and territory: how can architecture bring out the identities of places? Can architecture affect communities perceptions of their home territories? Can public space be considered “educating”? Can a landscape architect contribute to strengthening the identity of place?
Architects and landscape architects working on spatial issues are involved to try to provide answers-necessarily not definitive- to these questions. To further reinforce the central theme, the city in which the meeting is held is not indifferent to the topic being addressed, but rather conditions its choices.

Biographies:
Barbara Buser (1954) graduated in architecture from ETH Zurich in 1979, with a Master of Architecture from ETH Zürich and a Master of Advanced Studies in Energy Engineering from FHNW Muttenz. She worked in Africa for ten years, then in 1996, she and Klara Kläusler founded the first-ever Bauteilbörse (building parts exchange) in Basel and in 1998 she co-founded the architectural practice baubüro mitte ‒afterwards renamed baüburo in situ ‒ together with Eric Honegger. Buser is also a founder and partner of Denkstatt, a think tank specialized in the development of projects in urban and rural contexts, the Unterdessen project, and the circular engineering platform Zirkular with over 100 collaborators. Thanks to the many regeneration projects carried out over the years, in 2020 she was awarded the „Grand Prix Meret Oppenheim“ from the Federal Office of Culture together with Eric Honegger.
Jacopo Ammendola (1983) is an architect, designer, and researcher. He is among the founding members of Orizzontale, a collective of architects whose work spans architecture, landscape, public art, and self-construction. With Orizzontale, since 2010, he has been promoting projects of common relational spaces, giving form to both dismissed and unseen images of the city. Since 2020, he has been part of the curatorial staff of VUOTO, a transmedial platform that explores new approaches to urban design. He holds a PhD in Architecture and he is currently involved in research and teaching at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano.
Giovanni Romagnoli (1983) graduated from the Faculty of Architecture Valle Giulia in Rome in 2010; in 2016, he obtained a PhD from the University La Sapienza, with a thesis entitled „Romatiberina – La città e la sua stratificazione: una visione per il Tevere” (Romatiberina – The city and its stratification: a vision for the Tiber“). He has been a Visiting Professor at Universidade Cidade di San Paolo, Brazil, ETH Zurich, and IUAV Venice, as well as Adjunct Professor at Syracuse University in Florence. Since 2022, he has opened GR*A in Rome, an architectural studio that includes a gallery and exhibition space curated by Asterisco, a multidisciplinary program dedicated to emerging artists, in collaboration with the art historian and curator Greta Voeller.
