La Ribot Ensemble a Roma – Un triplo programma

A programme of performances taking place in Rome to celebrate the great career of dancer, choreographer and visual artist La Ribot.

La Ribot was born in Madrid in 1962 and is currently living in Geneva and performing internationally. La Ribot was awarded with Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at Biennale Danza di Venezia 2020, Grand Prix suisse de danse par l’Office fédéral de la culture en 2019, Premio en Artes Plásticas de Comunidad de Madrid (España, 2018), Medalla de Oro al Merito en las Bellas Arte (España, 2015), Premio Nacional de Danza, Ministerio de Cultura (España, 2000). La Ribot is a choreographer, dancer, and visual artist. Her art emerged at the end of Spain’s democratic transition in the 1980s and has gone on to profoundly change the field of contemporary dance. She defies the frameworks and formats of the stage and the museum, borrowing freely from the vocabularies of theater, visual art, performance art, film, and video to achieve a conceptual shift in choreography. Her solos, collective explorations, experiments with amateurs, installations, and moving images are the many facets of a protean practice that constantly focus on the rights of the body. The artist has presented her choreographic work at, among others, Tate Modern, London; Festival d’Automne, Théâtre de la Ville and Centre Pompidou, Paris; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS), Madrid; Aichi Triennale, Nagoya; Galería Soledad Lorenzo, Madrid; Museu Serralves, Porto; the Art Unlimited platform at the Art Basel Festival, Basel; S.M.A.K., Ghent; and Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC), Mexico City. La Ribot’s visual work is part of major private and public collections, including Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS), Madrid; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Centre national des arts plastiques, Paris; el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (MUSAC), Leon; Artium (Centro-Museo Vasco de Arte Contemporáneo), Vitoria; and Fonds régional d’art contemporain (FRAC) de Lorraine, Metz.

A biting and critical exhibition-installation, La Ribot enacts a demonstration made up of slogans and cries of laughter in response to the absurdities of today’s world and the deadly ideologies that govern it.

Pièce distinguée n°45 plays with the rituals of performing arts and the power of painting. It is also an investigation into the subtle play of erased identities.

Begun in 2014 and finished in 2017, FILM NOIR is a project proving: the figure of the extra, the ’supernumerary‘ or background performer. La Ribot’s pieces 12 toneladas de Plumas (1991), 40 Espontáneos (2004), and PARAdistinguidas (2011), for example, invited extras (local people with little or no theatrical experience) to centre-stage in new, live works for the theatre. In contrast, FILM NOIR looks back into movie history and uses video to explore the dynamics of cinematic extra-hood. FILM NOIR takes a close look at the extras in Spartacus (1960) and El Cid (1961) – human ‚litmus paper‘ whose actions and attitudes reveal the two productions’ contrasting ideologies in 60s Franco’s Spain.

This heart is a dark, maddening, and dangerous non-place, from which emerges an acute feminist critique of the imperatives dictated to women to ‚perform‘ their gender satisfactorily, with a bouquet of incessant, normative, often grotesque, sometimes contradictory, and even impossible demands.
