The Friday afternoons at Istituto Svizzero are dedicated to our residents. It is an opportunity for the public to learn more about the projects they are working on during this year’s residency.

Curated by Robin Meier, Roma Calling fellow 2018/2019.

When we vote, how does each person make up their mind? Do starlings use some kind of telepathy to coordinate their movements across hundreds of meters in the sky? How do thousands of fireflies synchronize their flashing? And could these collective movements somehow be manipulated?

A week after the European elections, we explore collective decision making in insects, birds and humans in conversation with Jérôme Gautheret, correspondent for Le Monde in Italy and Irene Giardina, Associate Professor of Theoretical Physics, Department of Physics, Sapienza University of Rome.

Programme:
Introduced by the projection of Synchronicity, a film on synchronizing fireflies in Thailand, the conversation will continue in Tor Marancia on a night walk in a park searching for live fireflies.

The talk will be held in Italian.

Jérôme Gautheret è corrispondente del quotidiano Le Monde in Italia e vive a Roma dall’ottobre del 2016.

Irene Giardina è una fisica teorica, con una formazione in fisica statistica. Ha lavorato, per un periodo di tempo, sui sistemi disordinati e sul comportamento del vetro nella materia condensata, per poi passare ai sistemi biologici.
