RIVIERA #02

The offices of Sternberg Press in Berlin are on Karl Marx Allee. From the street, one sees two windows through which the small staff can be glimpsed at work, behind big monitors in a distinctive setting with wooden furnishings. Karl Marx is the tutelary deity, represented by the neon sign with his name in capital letters above the windows.
The publishing house founded in 1999 by Caroline Schneider in Berlin has a philosophy of book production at affordable prices, without sacrificing content of contemporary interest and great care in the making of the books themselves, working with the most experimental graphic design studios.
The Sternberg Press catalogue has hundreds of titles, the result of the work of critics, philosophers, artists, designers, writers, curators who have widened perspectives, interpretations and definitions while stimulating a multidisciplinary, collaborative approach.
The sheltered worlds of art, architecture and design face off and open up on the pages of these books, and in the series of publications created over the years to explore, with a critical spirit, the concepts and currents of the present and the past: from art criticism to artists’ books, to the social and political debate. The pocket format, ideal for scientific subjects, alters expectations regarding form and content. The publisher sets out to identify thematic paths, which rather than favoring nostalgia nurture lively debate on open, timely issues.
