The annual conference of the International Union of Institutes of Archaeology, History and Art History in Rome will be delivered in Italian by Professor Nikolas Jaspert (Heidelberg University, Germany).
This conference seeks to open up new perspectives on established areas of historical research. What can we learn about the cultural, religious, economic and social history of the medieval Mediterranean if we take the marine organisms and substances found in the sea as the starting point for our reflections?
The International Union brings together thirty-eight Italian and international research institutes from nineteen European and non-European countries, all active in the fields of archaeology, history and art history.
Nikolas Jaspert (Melbourne, 1962) is Professor of Medieval History at Heidelberg University, a position he has held since 2013. He previously taught at the Free University of Berlin, the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and Ruhr-Universität Bochum. His research focuses on medieval Mediterranean history, transcultural relations and religious history. He has directed several international research institutions and initiatives, including the Centre for Mediterranean Studies at Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the Société Internationale des Historiens de la Méditerranée. He is a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and serves on the editorial boards of several academic journals and book series.
