How does proximity emerge in our digital present? How do we hear, how do we feel ourselves via the glossy surface of our screens? Sentimi. Hear me. Feel me. The artist Delphine Chapuis Schmitz has developed the digital project sentimi for Istituto Svizzero. The artistic intervention consists of a series of audio pieces that can be heard—preferably with headphones—on the institute’s website from September 16. The result is a poetic composition of partially appropriated texts, which also plays with the institute’s multilingual website. The voice addresses us directly, there is an ‘I’ and a ‘you’, we hear fragments and words in Italian, French, German, and English, breath and sound. sentimi asks about the possibilities of the real and virtual, of the imaginary and imagined encounters in today’s world. Delphine Chapuis Schmitz also deals with the real absence of bodies on the one hand, on the other, the immediate, material, even physical presence of language(s), the voice . With headphones in our ears we hear and feel this voice, this body—and all of a sudden, they are very, very close and the encounter is perhaps real.

Delphine Chapuis Schmitz (b. 1979 in Boulogne-Billancourt, France, lives in Zurich, Switzerland) received a master’s degree in Fine Arts at the Zurich University of the Arts in 2012 after obtaining a PhD in Philosophy at the University Paris 1-Panthéon Sorbonne in 2006. In her artistic practice, she explores ways of making sense and the poetic potentials of language(s) in our present times. Her writings take shape in performative readings, installative environments, as well as (online) publications.

Her work has been shown at various venues including I Never Read, Basel; CAN-Centre d’art Neuchâtel; Centre Pompidou, Paris; La Galerie, Noisy-le-Sec; Museum Haus Konstruktiv, Zürich; Corner College, Zürich; Milieu, Bern; Fondazione Ratti, Como. She won several prizes, among which the Swiss Art Award and the Art Prize of the City of Zurich, both in 2017. She is teaching at the Zurich University of the Arts: since 2012 in the Master Transdisciplinarity in the Arts and since 2019 in the new CAS Program “Schreiben in Kunst und Kultur”. She is also working as a translator and has collaborated to numerous publications, both in the academic and in the artistic field.
