Cavare luce da una rapa

The event is part of the series I Pomeriggi dedicated to the Fellows.
Curated by Oz Oderbolz (Fellow Roma Calling / Visual Arts).

In Switzerland, there is a tradition of carving lanterns out of turnips. Known as Räbeliechtli, they are hollowed out, decorated with small patterns and illuminated from within. Children carry them through the streets as the days grow shorter.
For this event, artist Oz Oderbolz brings the tradition to Rome, inviting children, young people and adults to carve their own turnip lanterns. What is removed in the process will be collected and preserved as pickles, extending the life of the vegetable beyond the afternoon.
Working across sculpture, installation and performance, Oz is interested in how familiar objects, inherited customs and collective practices shape our understanding of belonging. The workshop continues this interest through a simple act of making together, allowing a tradition to take on another life in a different place.

No previous experience is needed. Come by, choose a turnip and start carving.

The event may be photographed and/or video recorded for archival, educational, and related promotional purposes. By attending this event, you are giving your consent to be photographed and/or video recorded.

Oz Oderbolz (1988) is an artist based in Zurich. Their work moves between sculpture, installation, performance, and collaborative formats. Through everyday and traditional objects, they trace how materials, spaces, and conventions of use carry histories of labor, ownership, gender, and care. Oz co-founded TOXI in Zurich and has exhibited at Kunstmuseum Luzern, Istituto Svizzero, and Ausstellungsraum Klingental, Basel. In Rome, their research will focus on folkloric and theatrical forms of performance, especially masked practices, working with archives and participatory settings.
