The new technologies have intensified to a remarkable degree the progress of urban studies and the development of new multimedia historical projects. Yet their authors and developers face multiple challenges. How can a variety of sources from different repositories be integrated in a user-friendly way? Can a digital platform become a new agora for democratic representations of multiple voices, or does it replicate existing divides?  What are the ways of engaging various audiences in the age of “multimedia deluge”? Considering the examples of two web-projects focusing on the history of Lviv (Ukraine) and Luxembourg, the speakers will reflect on the role of digital instruments in the construction and visualization of complex and contested urban pasts.

In collaboration with the University of St. Gallen, the event is part of the lecture cycle „Spaces of Power and Power of Spaces“ at the HSG.

The conference will be held in English and can be followed via web, registration required.

Sandra Camarda (Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History) will present the digital exhibition Éischte Weltkrich: Remembering the Great War in Luxembourg, focusing on the main strategies of digital storytelling.

Anna Chebotarova (University of St. Gallen), who cooperates with Lviv Center for Urban History in East-Central Europe, will talk about “Lviv Interactive” e “Urban Media Archive” – web-accessible, interactive platforms seeking to present the contemporary, living city in its historical dimension rather than reproducing a static picture of the past.
