EXTATIQUE AFFECTION

The event will be held at the Teatro delle Bellezze, Piazza dei Coronari 1, Roma
Curated by Chloé Delarue (Fellow Roma Calling, Visual arts).
‚I Pomeriggi‘ series

Inspired by the venue as a singular off-camera, Chloé Delarue invites the British composer John Bence, the Korean DJ, producer and visual artist Jaeho Hwang and the musician and producer Cosimo Damiano to perform for the evening Extatique Affection. This proposal explores emotions relating to the troubles of our contemporary world through the experience of live music. Through the transcendence, metaphysics and spirituality that connect them, the two guest artists each have a unique sound environment. Teatro delle Bellezze will then be the place where Gregorian chant, orchestral arrangements or field recording meet on the one hand, and on the other hand, the dark and choppy rhythms of the experimental London club scene with harsh industrial sounds and traditional Korean instruments.

Biographies

John Bence Raised in Bristol’s burgeoning underground electronic music scene and a graduate of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, combines Gregorian chant, orchestral arrangements, synthesizers and field recordings to manifest powerful emotions. The composer’s early works focused on the human experience, charting the composer’s own experiences with addiction and alcoholism in both stark minimalism and caustic noise eruptions. His most recent work shows Bence coming fully into his own as a composer, deftly threading together gauzy electronic atmospheres, brooding orchestral passages and minimalist piano meditations; revealing new surprises at every twist and turn.

Cosimo Damiano is an electronic producer, sound artist and eclectic Dj, Cosimo Damiano has a strong background in Rome’s rave scene, from his numerous residencies, to his long-time collaborations and projects such as Salò, Canzonieri, Deltaplanet and Neurodreamers.

Chloé Delarue (1986) is an artist living and working in Geneva. Through the complex relationships of digital technologies with the living, she observes the alteration of reality disrupting our systems of representation and identification. Her work has been exhibited in institutions such as the Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Chaux-de-Fonds, Kunsthaus Langenthal, Salle de Bains in Lyon and the Villa du Parc in Annemasse, Windhager von Kaenel in Zurich and most recently at the frank elbaz gallery in Paris. In Rome, she will realise a new series of works reflecting on the notions of reproducibility and simulation by collecting representative fragments of the mythical and contemporary history of the city, through the use of photogrammetry.

Jaeho Hwang is a London/Seoul based DJ, producer, and visual artist who recontextualizes traditional Korean instrumentation and brings it into the contemporary club music scene. Inspired by the Buddhist concept of impermanent selfhood, his first EP Non-Self/비자아  combines dark, industrial club beats with old Korean sound and samples. Jaeho explores his sense of identity in the digital age as refracted through the Buddhist concept of anatta, or non-self, the belief that there is no unchanging, permanent soul or essence in living beings. Non-Self/비자아  was featured in XLR8R, DUMMY Magazine, Mixmag Korea, KALTBLUT Magazine, BBC Radio 6, 4:3 Boiler Room, etc.  Jaeho is a member of the Chinabot collective, created to change the dialogue surrounding Asian music. He has been invited to play on NTS Radio and hosts a monthly show on Internet Public Radio where he takes listeners on a journey through intriguing genres such as East and Southeast Asian music, Experimental, Avant-Garde, Techno, Electro, Pop, and K-Pop.
