Placing a work of art, a design object, or displaying architectural plans and models in space, means presenting the viewer not only with the work itself, but also providing tools for understanding. The exhibition container itself can convey an atmosphere, it can say something of its own history and memory, or it can deny itself and remain mute. Discussing these issues are Anna Puigjaner and Francesca Torzo ― both holders of professorships in Switzerland, at ETH Zurich and the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio, respectively ― and designers with several borderline works between architecture, art and design to their credit.
Swiss Talks. Architecture VS Art
Swiss Talks is a series of talks dedicated to the orientations of contemporary architecture in Switzerland, now in its seventh edition.
Three evenings during 2023 are dedicated to intersections between architecture and art, from the Alpine valleys historically and geographically connected to Italy, such as Engadina and Val Bregaglia, in an imaginary descent will lead towards the Venice lagoon, in conjunction with the Biennale. How does an art museum age? How to spatially enhance a large art collection? What does it mean to design an atelier to house an artist’s work? What different approaches can guide the design of an art gallery?
The recognition of 2 CFP for architects from the CNAPPC is confirmed for this initiative.

Anna Puigjaner (1980, Barcelona) is a PhD architect and researcher, co-founder of MAIO, an architectural office based in Barcelona. Her work, linked to feminist studies, is focused on alternative and inclusive domestic architectures able to redefine former biased structures. She is currently Professor of Architecture and Care at ETH Zürich. Formerly, she taught at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation GSAPP at Columbia University, at the Royal College of Arts, London, and at the Barcelona School of Architecture ETSAB/ETSAV – UPC. She has also lectured at Yale University, Harvard University, FAU Lisboa, Brussels School of Architecture UCL-LOCI, UCLA, among other universities. Her writings have been published on Architectural Review, Real Review, Harvard Design Magazine and PLOT among others. She has been finalist of the Rolex Mentor & Protégé Initiative (2016), granted by the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts (2018), and awarded for her research ‘Kitchenless City’ with the Wheelwright Prize, Harvard GSD (2016).
Francesca Torzo (1975, Padova) studied at TU Delft, ETSAB Barcelona, Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio and IUAV in Venezia. In 2001 developed an experimental dry construction in stone together with eng. Jurg Conzett and HTW, Chur. She worked as project architect by Peter Zumthor Architekturbüro Haldenstein (2001-2002), and by Bosshard Vaquer Architekten Zurich (2003). In 2008 she founded her own office in Genoa. She held teaching activity at Atelier Bearth in AAM in Mendrisio (2009-2017), and at Bergen Arkitekthøgskole in Norway (2017-2021); since 2020 she chairs a design atelier at AAM in Mendrisio. In 2018 she was invited as participant to the 16th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, FREESPACE, curated by Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara and was appointed Chairman of Maarten Van Severen Foundation in Gent (2018-2019). She won the Moira Gemill Prize for Emerging Architecture in 2020. The project Z33 house for contemporary art in Hasselt was awarded the international Piranesi award (2018), the Premio Italiano di Architettura (2020) and was among the awarded five finalists of the Mies van der Rohe Award (2022).
