As part of the third edition of Buffalo (10-17.06.2022), the contemporary dance festival curated by Michele Di Stefano, Istituto Svizzero is pleased to support the participation of dancer and choreographer Cindy Van Acker.

The artist will present the two solos Shadowpieces VI and VIII in the magnificent setting of the Terme di Diocleziano, a space dating back to the IV century whose volumetric grandeur and tension of the relics encourage the reverberation of gesture and an atmosphere of subtle subversion, in dialogue between body and monumentality. Shadowpieces is a long-term project that Cindy Van Acker created between 2018 and 2021. It includes a series of 10 solos, intended to be presented in different contexts, mostly on-site and outdoors. Each solo is built on the unique and intimate relationship between the choreographer, the performer and a specific piece of music. The latter was selected by the performer from Cindy Van Acker’s personal collection.

Cindy Van Acker initially danced with the Royal Ballet of Flanders in Belgium and at the Grand Théâtre de Genève before making her name on the contemporary dance scene in Geneva in the 1990s. In 2002 she founded the Cie Greffe Dance Company and created the solo Corps 00:00, which brought her international recognition. Since then she has completed about 20 projects for her company and choreographed productions for institutions such as the Ballet de Lorraine, the Grand Théâtre de Genève and the P.A.R.T.S. School of Dance in Brussels. Of fundamental importance for her career was her collaboration with choreographer Myriam Gourfink, set designer Victor Roy, musician Mika Vainio (Pan Sonic) and Italian director Romeo Castellucci. In 2005, Castellucci invited her to present Corps 00:00 at the Venice Biennale. Her work as a choreographer combines aesthetic restraint, minimalist movement, meticulous composition and electronic music, and with an almost scientific accuracy examines the connections between body, soul, sound and rhythm, creating works that transcend the boundaries between dance, performance and plastic arts.
