DIY Academy

To coincide with the Milano Design Week 2023, Istituto Svizzero takes part to Urgent Legacy, a group exhibition that brings together emerging designers, independent studios, established brands as well as education and research institutions at the House of Switzerland. On this occasion, the collective INNER LIGHT will hold the two-day long printing and upcycling workshop DIY Academy.

During the workshop, the collective invites the participants to come and give a new life their old clothes. Through silkscreen printing and sewing, the public can come and give their favorite stained shirt a makeover and learn about different ways to upcycle clothing. Coming from the punk movement in the 70’s, DIY is more than an ecological way of life, a way of seeing clothes like unique works of art as they are the shield that connects us to the outside world. INNER LIGHT will prepare a batch of special designs.

Please bring your own clothing to work on.

INNER LIGHT is a collective working around printing and textile. Bringing together four members, Kim Coussée, Sherian Mohammed Forster, Eliott Villard and Gaia Vincensini (Fellow Istituto Svizzero 2022/23), who each carry their own artistic practice, Inner Light functions as a platform for exchange and transdisciplinary research into alternative materials, production, and self-organization. Diverting the serial aspect of printmaking through the production of unique pieces and objects, while opening up printing practice to other fields, INNER LIGHT initiates a reflection on craft as a radical approach in the fashion industry.

House of Switzerland (17-23.04.2023) is a joint project run by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia and Presence Switzerland in partnership with Switzerland Global Enterprise/Swiss Business Hub Italy and the Swiss Design Association, with the support of Bally and the Ikea Foundation Switzerland.
