Walter Burkert: An Incomparable Historian of Religion and Classicist in a New Light.

On the occasion of the publication of the last two volumes of the Collected Essays of Walter Burkert,
1990 Balzan Prize winner for Ancient Sciences (Mediterranean Basin).

Walter Burkert (1931-2015) – Prof. of Classics, in particular Greek, at the University of Zurich 1969–1996  – was one of the most innovative classical scholars and historians of religion of the 20th and early 21st centuries, with a worldwide impact well beyond his discipline. The last two volumes of his collected essays, which will be published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht/Brill Germany in 2024 and 2025, open up refreshing new perspectives on the multifaceted personality, academic career and scientific approach of this unique scholar.

Presentation by Prof. Christoph Riedweg, University of Zurich, former director of Istituto Svizzero, member of the Balzan General Prize Committee.

In collaboration with the International Balzan Prize Foundation
