“I Pomeriggi” series
To die in homeland/Morire in patria
The event is part of the series I Pomeriggi dedicated to the Fellows.
Curated by Juli Sando (Fellow Milano Calling / Film, Performance).
What is a homeland? What do death and mourning mean for diasporas and multicultural people? What political and societal issues remain after death?
These are the questions that artist and filmmaker Juli Sando asked herself during her residency at Istituto Svizzero in Milan.
For one evening, she invites four artists to explore these themes alongside her own work: Fhunyue Gao with her enchanting solo musical performance „YUE月 G“, a tribute to her deceased grandparents, Jeanne Tara with their project „La Restitution“ addressing the mourning of our stolen memories, Xin Alessandro Zheng with his short film „Where the Leaves Fall“ which explores grief through a diasporic gaze, and finally Melty’n Pothead with a new performance „I’ll twerk on your ancestor’s grave“ which through song, drag and lip-sync stuns with melodies of resistance.
I Pomeriggi is a multidisciplinary event series curated by Istituto Svizzero Fellows. Based on their ongoing research, Fellows in residency in Rome, Milan, and Palermo develop events that are part of the Institute’s public programme, fostering dialogue between art, science, and research. The series features various formats, often with external guests and partners, including conferences, seminars, performances, concerts, walks, and other intiatives.

Fhunyue Gao is a multidisciplinary artist working across dance, music, theatre, film, cooking and cultural event-making. Active since 2010, she has developed solo and collaborative projects throughout Switzerland and Europe. Her practice explores melancholic and surreal states of being in which time and social space dissolve, using performance, music and visual elements to express the indefinable. A central strand of her work addresses colonial histories affecting Asian communities. Musically, she moves between pop, electronics and spoken word, often working with theremin and Buchla synthesiser. She is currently touring her solo project YUE 月G and has been composing for theatre and film since 2016.
Jeanne Tara is a multidisciplinary artist working with sculpture, painting, video and installation. Through these combined media, they develop a sensitive reflection on gesture and transmission. Drawing from their subjective experience of urban space, they read architectural forms as dispersed signs of power and authority within the public realm, examining how these structures shape social realities and potential divisions. Their work questions how hegemonic culture operates not only through language but also through form and aesthetics, placing dominant narratives in tension with subversive ones to reconsider shared cultural and social frameworks.
Xin Alessandro Zheng is an Italian-Chinese director born and raised in Milan, working across cinema, advertising and television with a strong focus on storytelling. Following his award-winning short films Where the Leaves Fall (2020) and Xing Long (2025), he is currently developing his debut feature film. His work often explores identity, memory and cross-cultural experience through intimate and visually precise narratives.
Melty’n Pothead is a multidisciplinary artist and Drag Queer performer. Through lip-sync and live vocal performances, they explore their gender identity and their Belgian-Cameroonian heritage. Since 2022, they have brought a distinctive and magical sensibility to bars, cabarets, cultural centres, theatres, art spaces and festivals across Switzerland, Belgium and France.
