Eve Syndrome

The event is part of the series I Pomeriggi dedicated to the Fellows.
Curated by Paul Hutzli (Fellow Roma Calling / Visual Arts).

After presenting the research he developed during his residency on how religious representations shape collective worldviews and cultural imaginaries, Paul Hutzli introduces performer Sofia Kouloukouri and her piece Eve Syndrome.

Eve Syndrome is a feminist retelling of the Biblical story of Eve, the first woman on earth, retracing a long unaddressed heritage of female guilt, and playfully revisiting mythological and religious iconography. Taking the floor and becoming the historian of her life, Eve not only attempts to banish female guilt but also invites us to set the record straight collectively.

The event may be photographed and/or video recorded for archival, educational, and related promotional purposes. By attending this event, you are giving your consent to be photographed and/or video recorded.

Paul Hutzli (*1992) is an artist who lives and works in Geneva. In his work, he explores the relationship between individuals and their (social) environment and how the latter shapes them, paying particular attention to the power dynamics at play. He developed his practice at ESAM Caen/Cherbourg and HEAD in Geneva, where he wrote his Master’s thesis “Carnavals” with Christophe Kihm. He presented his first solo exhibition, White Lite, at Aduplex, which was followed by exhibitions in Switzerland, France, Germany, and Poland. He has exhibited at the Kunsthalle Bern, the Centre d’Art Contemporain of Geneva, Halle Nord in Geneva, the Dzielna Foundation in Warsaw, and has benefited from an artist residency at the Swiss Institute in Rome, Ujazdowski Castle – Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw as well as at the Cité des Arts in Paris.

Sofia Kouloukouri is a visual artist, performer, writer and art historian. Through endurance and narration, her work deals with literal and affective weights as a feminine heritage originating in the education of girls, myth and religious doctrines. Within a feminist ecology Kouloukouri explores what it means to be solid as a girl and woman today. Kouloukouri holds Masters
degrees in cinema studies (AUTH, Thessaloniki), in Visual Arts (Edhea, Sierre), and in Art History (UNIGE, Genève). Her academic research revolves around women, art, sex and agency. Her writings have been published by Nero Editions, Miami Books and The Art Newspaper. Her first book Artistes Femmes et Travail du Sexe; was published by L’Harmattan in 2025. Kouloukouri work has been presented among others at:  Bourse de Commerce / Collection Pinault, Paris; Centre Wallonie- Bruxelles, Paris; Roman Road, London; Théâtre du Grütli, Genève; Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Buenos Aires (MACBA), Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts (MCBA), Lausanne; Palais de Rumine, Lausanne; Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhague. In 2024 Kouloukouri was part of ORGANISMO, TBA21 Academy’s research program about art in critical applied ecologies. In 2025 Kouloukouri was selected by the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens (EMST) for a residency at the Cité internationale des Arts in Paris. Since 2024, besides her artworks, performances and texts, Kouloukouri has also been curating, with Alexios Seilopoulos the itinerant film program Pleasure & Disobedience.
